[News Culture] Friday brought no breakout winner at Korea’s box office. ‘Final Interview’ moved back to No. 1 with 22,751 admissions, finishing just 2,579 ahead of Brad Pitt’s ‘Heart of the Beast’ as the weekend opened with the market still running at low volume.
The Nov. 6 result lifted ‘Final Interview’ to 85,071 admissions, according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC). The mystery had opened at No. 1 on Wednesday before briefly surrendering the lead to ‘Detective Conan: The Counterfeit Case of Ultra 30’ a day later.
Directed by Kim Jung-hoon, the film brings six applicants into the final round of a fiercely competitive hiring process. Their carefully managed interview begins to unravel when mysterious envelopes expose secrets about the candidates.
Jo Yi-hyun, Kim Jae-won, Kang You-seok, Bae Gang-hee, Shin Seung-ho and Kwak Dong-yeon lead the ensemble.
‘Heart of the Beast’ climbed to second with 20,172 admissions, bringing its Korean total to 309,256.
Brad Pitt stars as James, a former Army Special Forces soldier stranded in the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash. With only his retired military dog Odin at his side, James is forced into a fight for survival in the remote terrain.
Japanese animation then swept the next three positions.
‘Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island’ rose to third with 18,455 admissions, pushing its Korean total to 2,658,249.
The long-running hit follows Chiikawa and friends to a mysterious island, where the promise of an unusually large reward leads them into a dangerous mission.
‘Detective Conan: The Counterfeit Case of Ultra 30,’ which had opened at No. 1 a day earlier, fell to fourth with 18,203 admissions. Its two-day total reached 46,368.
The mystery follows Conan as a counterfeit banknote case expands into a national emergency, drawing police forces from across Japan and the FBI into the investigation.
‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie -Walpurgisnacht: Rising-’ rounded out the top five with 5,924 admissions, bringing its total to 24,174.
With three Japanese animated films occupying third through fifth, the upper end of the chart remains crowded even as the overall market continues to wait for a title capable of breaking away from the pack.
