[News Culture] More than 6,200 children and teenagers have participated in Allkidstra since the music education initiative began in 2009. Seventeen years later, its advanced youth wind ensemble will present the results of that work in a concert featuring contemporary wind band repertoire and a collaboration with classical saxophonist Brandon Choi.
Organized by the nonprofit Walking With Us, the 14th Allkidstra Annual Concert, titled Overture, will take place on November 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Aram Concert Hall in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. The Allkidstra Honor Band will perform under conductor Jang Han-sol.
Established to provide instrumental training to children and teenagers with limited access to music education, Allkidstra has reached 6,225 participants between 2009 and 2025. Its Honor Band brings together young musicians selected through auditions, providing advanced ensemble training and regular performance opportunities.
The group recently earned a silver prize in the special division of the 50th Korea National Wind Band Competition, an achievement that will be reflected in the repertoire chosen for the upcoming concert.
The first half of the program focuses on the expressive and technical range of wind ensemble music. Japanese composer Itaru Sakai's Märchen, the work performed at the national competition, explores contrasting instrumental colors and the interplay between woodwind and brass sections.
The ensemble will also perform Choreography by American composer Robert Sheldon. Drawing on the relationship between music and dance, the composition alternates sharply accented rhythmic passages with lyrical material. Its shifting musical gestures require precise articulation, coordinated ensemble responses and careful attention to phrasing.
The second half centers on Roberto Molinelli's Four Pictures from New York, with Brandon Choi as saxophone soloist. The Italian composer's four-movement work portrays contrasting scenes of New York City through musical styles that incorporate classical writing, tango and jazz.
The opening movement, Dreamy Dawn, evokes daybreak against the Manhattan skyline. Tango Club, dedicated to Astor Piazzolla, draws on the rhythmic character of Argentine tango, while Sentimental Evening introduces the more intimate language of a jazz ballad. The final movement, Broadway Night, captures the energy of New York's theater district.
The composition places considerable demands on both the soloist and accompanying ensemble. Changes in tempo, rhythmic character and phrasing require close coordination, particularly as the saxophone moves between lyrical passages and more rhythmically driven material.
For the young players, working with an established soloist offers an opportunity to develop the listening and responsiveness required in concerto performance, where the ensemble must balance its own musical identity with the expressive decisions of the soloist.
Allkidstra's educational approach places similar emphasis on collective musicianship. Members of the Honor Band rehearse on Saturdays, working on instrumental technique, ensemble balance and the coordination necessary for sustained group performance.
The program is designed not only to develop musical proficiency but also to provide opportunities for cooperation, discipline and artistic participation among young musicians from different backgrounds.
Kim Hyun-ju, secretary-general of Walking With Us, expressed hope that the concert would allow the students to share their accumulated skills and enthusiasm with audiences, and that the experience would contribute to their continued development.
Supported by SM Entertainment and SM Classics, the concert is free to attend.
The title Overture reflects the educational purpose of the event. While the concert marks 17 years of Allkidstra's work, it also represents another stage in the musical development of its young performers, whose training extends beyond the concert hall into their broader experiences of learning and collaboration.
