[News Culture] ‘Final Interview’ opened at No. 1 in Korea on Wednesday, but its 26,700-admission debut underscored how little traffic the market is generating right now.
The mystery thriller drew 26,700 moviegoers on Nov. 4, bringing its total to 42,574 including previews, according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC).
The result was enough to lead the chart, though it came in a market where even the top title is struggling to break out. The previous day, fewer than 18,000 admissions had been enough for first place.
Directed by Kim Jung-hoon, ‘Final Interview’ brings six applicants together for the final stage of a high-stakes hiring process. The carefully managed competition begins to unravel when each candidate discovers a mysterious envelope containing damaging revelations, turning the interview into a battle of suspicion and self-preservation.
Jo Yi-hyun, Kim Jae-won, Kang You-seok, Bae Gang-hee, Shin Seung-ho and Kwak Dong-yeon lead the ensemble cast.
Brad Pitt’s ‘Heart of the Beast’ moved to second with 17,230 admissions, taking its Korean total to 271,042.
Pitt stars as James, a former Army Special Forces soldier stranded in the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash. His only companion is Odin, his retired military dog, as the pair fight to survive with no one else to rely on.
‘Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island’ followed with 13,962 admissions, lifting its Korean total to 2,627,527.
Based on Nagano’s popular manga, the Japanese animated hit follows Chiikawa and friends to a mysterious island after the promise of an unusually large reward pulls them into a dangerous mission.
‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie -Walpurgisnacht: Rising-’ opened at No. 4 with 13,393 admissions.
The latest theatrical chapter in the ‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica’ franchise continues the story of its magical girls and the brutal fate surrounding them, building on the world first introduced in the 2011 television anime.
‘Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng’ rounded out the top five with 5,351 admissions, bringing its cumulative audience to 87,318.
Lee Sun-bin stars as Maeng Bo-ram, a Korean-language teacher unexpectedly recruited into the tightly guarded process of writing South Korea’s national college entrance exam.
