[News Culture] Georges Bizet's Carmen will take on a different form in Busan this December as Grand Opera Company marks its 30th anniversary with a large-scale year-end gala. Titled Carmen vs. Carmen, the concert brings together internationally experienced opera singers, an orchestra and choirs for a program exploring the music of one of opera's most enduring works.
The performance is scheduled for December 12 at 7 p.m. at Busan Concert Hall. Rather than presenting a fully staged opera, the production places the emphasis on Bizet's music, drawing on the opera's themes of love, freedom, jealousy and fate.
Tenor Park Sung-kyu will perform the role of Don José. A graduate of the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, Park won first prizes at the Leoncavallo, Zandonai and Marseille international competitions. His career has taken him to major European opera houses, including London's Royal Opera House and theaters in Verona and Florence. He has performed leading roles at more than 30 theaters across Europe and elsewhere.
Mezzo-soprano Choi Seung-hyun will sing the title role of Carmen. Choi previously performed the role at the National Theatre in Prague, where her interpretation of Bizet's heroine received favorable reviews.
Italian conductor Carlo Palleschi will lead the performance. Having collaborated with internationally renowned singers, including Luciano Pavarotti, Palleschi brings extensive experience in the operatic repertoire. He will oversee an ensemble featuring Korean vocalists alongside orchestral and choral performers.
Violinist Park Ji-hye, baritone Moon Jung-hyun and soprano Park Hyun-jung will also appear. They will be joined by DIO Orchestra, Daegu Opera Choir and MK Junior Musical Company, bringing the total number of performers to approximately 150.
The concert's format gives the orchestra and vocalists distinct opportunities to explore Bizet's score. Instrumental arrangements will highlight the melodic and rhythmic qualities of Carmen, while operatic arias, ensembles and choral passages will bring the characters and their conflicts into focus.
The combination is intended to appeal both to established opera audiences and to listeners encountering the work through a concert presentation. By concentrating on the music rather than elaborate staging, the gala offers a different perspective on the dramatic contrasts that have helped sustain Carmen's popularity since its premiere in 1875.
The evening will conclude with a communal performance of "Auld Lang Syne." The approximately 150 performers will invite the audience to join them in singing the traditional year-end song, turning the finale into a shared celebration of the past year and the arrival of a new one.
Grand Opera Company's director, Ahn Ji-hwan, expressed appreciation for the support the company has received from Busan audiences over its three decades of activity. He said the organization was preparing a performance worthy of the interest surrounding its anniversary concert.
For the company, the gala represents both a celebration of its history and an opportunity to bring experienced international opera artists together with Korean orchestral and choral musicians.
Bizet's Carmen remains a staple of opera houses worldwide, admired for its memorable melodies, sharply drawn characters and tragic portrayal of love and obsession. With Carmen vs. Carmen, Grand Opera Company revisits that familiar score through the combined forces of soloists, orchestra and chorus.
