[News Culture] Seoul's Han River will provide the backdrop for an evening of live music on November 7, when an outdoor concert brings together Korean pop favorites, jazz improvisation, vibraphone performances and classical strings. The free event offers a varied program as the city moves deeper into autumn.
Organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the concert, titled An Autumn Night of Music on the Han River, will begin at 5 p.m. at Yeouido Floating Stage in Yeouido Hangang Park. The approximately two-hour program features singer Choi Seung-yeol, singer-songwriter Kim Chang-gi, jazz duo Park Jeong-in and Lee Gyu-ri, vibraphonist Yoon Hyun-sang, and string quartet Ensemble Allegri. Admission is free and open to the public.
The program brings together four acts representing different musical traditions, ranging from familiar Korean songs to jazz and chamber music. By presenting the performances in an outdoor setting, organizers hope to make live music accessible to a wider audience while offering an opportunity to enjoy the Han River at dusk.
Choi Seung-yeol and Kim Chang-gi share a musical connection to the late singer Kim Kwang-seok, whose songs remain widely recognized in South Korea. Choi gained public attention as the runner-up in the Kim Kwang-seok episode of JTBC's Hidden Singer 2, where his vocal resemblance to the singer drew considerable notice. Kim, a former member of the folk-rock group Zoo, performed alongside Kim Kwang-seok and wrote enduring songs including "On the Street" and "I Will Love You."
Jazz duo Park Jeong-in and Lee Gyu-ri will present a set built around vocals and piano. Their performance will draw on the expressive flexibility of jazz, with an emphasis on the interplay between the voice and keyboard.
Vibraphonist Yoon Hyun-sang will introduce a different instrumental texture to the evening. Known to television audiences through JTBC's Superband 2, Yoon works across classical, jazz and pop music. His instrument's sustained, resonant tones will provide a contrast to the vocal performances.
Ensemble Allegri will represent the classical portion of the program. The string quartet, comprising violins, viola and cello, performs repertoire rooted in the classical tradition, bringing the blended sonority of a chamber ensemble to the outdoor stage.
The venue itself is part of the event's appeal. Located within Yeouido Hangang Park, Floating Stage is a retractable performance facility built over the Han River. Its design allows performances to take place against the city's waterfront skyline, with seating for approximately 2,400 spectators.
Beyond its own cultural programming, the Seoul Metropolitan Government makes the venue available to independent arts organizations for performances in a range of genres. The November concert is also intended to highlight the stage's potential as an accessible outdoor cultural venue.
With popular songs, jazz and classical music sharing the same program, the concert offers audiences an opportunity to experience several musical styles without the formality of a traditional concert hall. The riverside setting adds another dimension, placing live performance within one of Seoul's most familiar public spaces.
