[News Culture] The most striking number at Korea’s box office Monday was not who finished first, but how little it took to get there.
Brad Pitt’s ‘Heart of the Beast’ drew 19,383 admissions on Nov. 2, enough to move into the No. 1 spot as traffic fell sharply across the market. The survival drama has now drawn 236,101 moviegoers, according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC).
No film in the top five reached 20,000 admissions for the day, underscoring the slowdown after a weekend in which ‘Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island’ had still been pulling six-figure crowds.
‘Heart of the Beast’ stars Pitt as James, a former Army Special Forces soldier stranded in the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash. With only his retired military dog Odin beside him, survival depends increasingly on the bond between the two.
‘Chiikawa’ slipped to second with 15,159 admissions, taking its Korean total to 2,599,014.
The Japanese animated hit has been one of the market’s strongest performers in recent weeks. Based on Nagano’s popular manga, the film follows Chiikawa and friends to a mysterious island after an unusually large reward draws them into a dangerous mission.
‘The Assassin(s)’ moved up to third with 5,163 admissions, bringing its cumulative audience to 3,453,120.
Hur Jin-ho’s historical thriller revisits the unresolved questions surrounding the Aug. 15, 1974 assassination attempt that killed South Korean First Lady Yuk Young-soo. Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il and Lee Min-ho lead the cast.
‘Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng’ followed in fourth with 4,847 admissions and has now drawn 76,615 moviegoers.
Lee Sun-bin stars as Maeng Bo-ram, a small-town Korean-language teacher unexpectedly recruited into the closely guarded operation that writes South Korea’s national college entrance exam. Yoo Jae-myung co-stars.
The rerelease of ‘Attack on Titan: Crimson Bow and Arrow’ rounded out the top five with 4,075 admissions, lifting its Korean total to 76,399.
The animated feature follows Eren Jaeger and his fellow soldiers as they fight to reclaim humanity’s freedom from the Titans.
