GTA 6's Rating Labels Name "Sex Scenes" — and One Missing Line May Mean No Online Mode at Launch

게임와이 2026-10-03 18:06:05 신고

Rockstar Games' upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) received official age ratings in the U.S., Europe, Australia and New Zealand one after another on Oct. 2 (local time), and two facts in the rating information are drawing attention ahead of release. One is that the classification spells out "sex scenes" explicitly, suggesting a higher level of intensity than the previous game. The other is that a certain notice is missing from the U.S. rating, which has raised the possibility that the game will have no online mode at launch.

According to GameY's reporting, GTA 6 received an "M (Mature)" rating (17+) from the U.S. ESRB and an 18 rating from Europe's PEGI. In Australia and New Zealand it received an "R18+" rating — an adults-only classification — with "Sex scenes" stated in the consumer advice. The release date is Nov. 19 (local time), and the platforms are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC release date has not yet been announced.

A Rating That Singles Out "Sex Scenes" — Unlike Its Predecessor

The ESRB's content descriptors for GTA 6 list seven items: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. In addition, the Australian and New Zealand classification wrote "sex scenes" as a separate phrase in its content advice. This contrasts with Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5), which contained sexual content such as depictions of prostitution but did not have "sex scenes" separately stated. Overseas outlets analyzed that the narrative, built around the relationship between the male and female leads Jason and Lucia, may have led to more direct sexual depictions than in the previous game.

The Line Missing From the Rating: A Sign of "No Online"

The point that drew even more interest is the item missing from the ESRB listing. The ESRB requires a "Users Interact" notice when a game has real-time communication between users, and an "Online Interactivity" notice when it has online features — and GTA 6's rating information carries neither. By contrast, the GTA 5 rating included the "Users Interact" notice. Overseas outlets reported that, since the ESRB requires disclosure of such features when they exist, the absence of the notice is closer to a disclosure that there are no multiplayer elements at launch than to a simple omission. Given the precedent of the previous game, which has generated revenue for more than a decade through GTA Online, the question of when an online mode will be added after launch has emerged as a new issue.

"In-Game Purchases" Without Loot Boxes: A Clue to Monetization

Monetization-related notices were also revealed. GTA 6's rating includes the "In-Game Purchases" interactive element, but not the "In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)" notice that applies to randomized items. Overseas outlets reported that the "In-Game Purchases" notice appears to refer to a $20 "Ultimate Edition" upgrade, and that, at least according to the rating information, loot-box-style monetization has not been confirmed.

Wrap-Up

GTA 6 has not yet been released, but the disclosure of its ratings alone has sparked active discussion among overseas gaming media and users. GamesRadar noted the higher level of sexual depiction compared with GTA 5, while outlets such as TechTimes gave significant coverage to the possibility that there is no online mode. However, Rockstar Games has not issued a separate statement on the details of the ratings, and its plans to introduce an online mode and the PC release schedule have not been officially confirmed. Meanwhile, about 50 days remain until GTA 6's release, and the content lineup at launch and whether an online service is introduced afterward are expected to shape the scale of its success.
