[News Culture] The Intern is beginning to establish itself as more than a one-day opening story.
The Korean remake, led by Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee, drew 46,155 admissions on Sept. 17 and held the No. 1 spot for a second consecutive day, according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC). Its cumulative audience reached 128,721.
The film had ended The Odyssey’s 42-day reign a day earlier, returning a Korean title to the top of the market for the first time in 50 days.
Directed by Kim Do-young, The Intern pairs Han’s Sun-woo, the founder of a fast-rising fashion company, with Choi’s Gi-ho, a veteran professional with 37 years of experience who unexpectedly enters her company as a senior intern. The film is a Korean remake of the Hollywood title of the same name.
The Odyssey remained close behind, drawing 39,365 admissions for second place. Christopher Nolan’s epic has now reached 10,960,848 admissions and is within roughly 40,000 of the 11 million mark.
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus on his journey home after the Trojan War, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron. Nolan wrote, directed and produced the project.
The day’s strongest new arrival was Resident Evil: Zero Night, which opened at No. 3 with 21,924 admissions. Including previews, its total stands at 22,875.
The survival-horror thriller follows a medical courier who is drawn without warning into a night-long fight for survival.
Obsession slipped to fourth with 21,591 admissions, bringing its cumulative total to 570,246. The horror film follows a romance that takes a sinister turn after a wish made to the mysterious One Wish Willow comes true.
Assassin(s), which opens Sept. 23, landed at No. 5 on the strength of 13,477 preview admissions.
Set against the Aug. 15, 1974 assassination attempt that shocked South Korea, the film follows an investigation into the unanswered questions and forces behind the attack on the country’s first lady.
