Basic skincare products are driving K-beauty's global export performance. According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), basic skincare accounted for $5.48 billion of Korea's $7 billion in cosmetics exports in the first half of the year — an overwhelming share. As high-efficacy ingredients like PDRN and retinol have grown in popularity, the 'technology' to stably formulate these ingredients and deliver them deep into the skin has emerged as a core competitive edge.
■ Stabilization Technology Advances to Minimize Active Ingredient Loss
Kolmar Korea draws on 36 years of R&D experience and data accumulated through partnerships with more than 4,800 client companies to lead the market by advancing stabilization and delivery technologies.
One of Kolmar Korea's core strengths in skincare is 'stabilization.' A representative example is nanoparticle technology, which finely mills active ingredients so they disperse evenly without degrading or clumping.
Celimax's 'Noni Energy Ampoule,' which applies Kolmar Korea's panthenol nanonization technology, has surpassed cumulative sales of 2.5 million bottles. Dongkook Pharmaceutical's 'Centellian24 Madeca Cream Time Reverse' also applies 'secondary nanonization,' a technology that nanonizes poorly soluble Centella asiatica extract twice.
Another stabilization technology is encapsulation, which protects active ingredients from external conditions and releases them gradually by enclosing them in microcapsules — a technique usable across creams, serums, ampoules and other formulations. It is applied to about half of recent client development requests, reflecting its wide utility.
■ Requests for Delivery Technology Development Up 40% in Two Years
Attention has recently shifted beyond stabilization to the importance of 'delivery technology,' which effectively penetrates active ingredients to where they are needed.
Delivery technologies using liposomes, exosomes and similar carriers are a high-difficulty field, as they must secure both formulation stability and skin feel at the same time. Development requests related to delivery technology at Kolmar Korea have grown more than 40% compared to two years ago, and the launch of products applying the technology has also grown more than 30% over the past two to three years.
In fact, about a third of the new skincare products manufactured by Kolmar Korea now feature delivery technology prominently. A representative example is Wellage's 'Real Hyaluronic Blue 100 Ampoule,' which applies liposome technology to wrap active ingredients and deliver them to the skin; it won an Olive Young Award last year and expanded into 12 overseas countries. Anua's 'Heartleaf 77% Hyaluronic Acid Soothing Toner' also stably realized a water-type formulation by micronizing exosomes down to 174 nanometers.
“Skincare is a field where manufacturers' R&D capabilities are concentrated, so technology gaps are clearly visible,” a Kolmar Korea official said. “We will continue to strengthen K-skincare's global standing through our overwhelming technological competitiveness.”
