‘The Journey to Gyeongju’ Turns Eight Years of Grief Into a Bloody Reckoning

[News Culture] The revenge at the heart of “The Journey to Gyeongju” is about to become brutally personal.

A newly released poster brings Ok-sil, played by Lee Jung-eun, face-to-face with Baek Sang-hyun, portrayed by Byun Yo-han. She is a mother who has spent eight years waiting to avenge her youngest daughter. He is the remorseless killer who tore her family apart.

Bloodied and visibly marked by a violent struggle, the two characters appear locked in a confrontation from which neither intends to walk away.

Ok-sil’s clenched jaw and unflinching stare reveal grief that has long since hardened into rage. The line, “Once you’re dead, our family can finally start over,” makes clear that revenge is no longer simply something she wants. It has become the only future she can imagine.

Lee compresses years of sorrow, fury and determination into a single expression, offering a glimpse of the emotional force behind Ok-sil’s pursuit.

Byun proves equally menacing as Sang-hyun. Bruised after what appears to have been a vicious physical clash, he shows no trace of guilt or fear. Instead, his crazed expression and the defiant line, “Why the f*** are you doing this to me?” present a killer who still sees himself as the victim.

That lack of remorse gives the showdown its most disturbing edge. Ok-sil arrives carrying eight years of pain, while Sang-hyun meets her anger with hostility rather than regret.

“The Journey to Gyeongju” follows a mother and her three surviving daughters as they embark on a revenge trip for the youngest child, Gyeongju, who never returned from a school excursion eight years earlier.

Directed by Kim Mi-jo, known for “The Seagull,” the film stars Lee Jung-eun, Gong Hyo-jin, Park So-dam, Lee Yeon and Byun Yo-han.

“The Journey to Gyeongju” opens in theaters across South Korea on Aug. 26.
