‘Hongseong National Heritage Night Tour’ Brings Hongju Eupseong to Life After Dark

[News Culture] When daylight fades over Hongju Eupseong Fortress, its stone walls begin to tell a different story. Light traces the old ramparts, performers move through the grounds and visitors step into a history that is no longer confined to plaques and display cases.

The 2026 Hongseong National Heritage Night Tour will take place Aug. 14 and 15 under the theme “Secrets of Hongju Eupseong.” More than a nighttime opening, the two-day festival transforms one of Hongseong’s best-known landmarks into an immersive meeting place for history, art and hands-on exploration.

Hongju Eupseong once stood at the administrative heart of Hongju-mok during the Joseon Dynasty. The fortress also carries memories of the Battle of Hongju and the righteous army resistance against Japanese rule. The festival brings those layers of history forward through visual installations, performances and participatory programs designed to make the past feel immediate.

The experience begins with the setting itself. In “Hongju Eupseong Embraces the Moon,” moon-shaped installations appear throughout the fortress grounds, casting a dreamlike glow across the walls. A separate lighting program draws attention to the stories embedded in different corners of the site, allowing illumination to serve as a form of historical narration.

Visitors looking for a more active experience can join “Treasure Hunt at Hongju Eupseong: The Ghost’s Invitation.” Accompanied by actors, participants roam the fortress after dark and complete a series of missions woven into the setting. Shadows, live performance and storytelling turn the grounds into an unfolding adventure, making visitors part of the narrative rather than passive spectators.

Hands-on workshops offer another way to approach the fortress’s history. Participants can make their own replica gate passes while learning how entry and social status were managed in earlier times. Keycap decorating and hand-mirror workshops reinterpret the names and imagery of national heritage as keepsakes that can be taken home.

Exhibitions and art programs broaden the festival’s perspective. “Frederick McKenzie’s Diary” revisits the story of the Hongju righteous army through the records of a foreign observer, offering a different lens on a familiar chapter of Korean history. A live caricature program also allows visitors to preserve their night at the fortress in a more personal form.

Performances bring additional energy to the grounds. “Defend Hongju Eupseong!” invites audience members to take on the role of righteous army fighters in an interactive historical reenactment. The production combines entertainment with experiential learning, moving history beyond explanation and into physical participation.

Street performances will appear at different locations across the fortress, adding an element of surprise to the evening. Visitors may encounter music, theater or costumed characters as they move between programs, allowing the festival to unfold differently with every route.

Food and overnight options extend the experience beyond the scheduled activities. The Hongju Eupseong Tavern serves regional dishes in a setting inspired by a traditional Korean inn, while the “Around Hongju Eupseong Stay” program connects the festival with nearby accommodations. The fortress becomes more than a brief stop, encouraging visitors to spend the night and explore Hongseong at a slower pace.

The festival reflects a wider shift in the way historic sites are presented. Rather than asking visitors simply to look, it gives them a role to play. The fortress walls become a canvas, the grounds become a stage and local history becomes something to walk through, touch and remember.

At Hongju Eupseong, darkness does not hide the past. For two summer nights, it gives history room to return.
