[News Culture] An intruder slipped into a quiet village in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, shortly after midnight on June 10. By dawn, a woman in her 60s had been found stabbed to death inside the country home where she lived alone.
The victim, identified by the pseudonym Seo Eun-joo, appeared to have been attacked before she could put up any meaningful resistance. Nearly two months later, police have yet to identify a suspect.
Authorities are offering a reward of up to 100 million won for information leading to a breakthrough, but the investigation remains stalled, leaving residents increasingly uneasy.
The killer appears to have taken elaborate precautions. Investigators found no usable DNA or fingerprints, while the suspect moved through the neighborhood without being captured by most of its security cameras.
One infrared recording, however, shows a figure passing near a rose-covered walkway and heading toward Seo’s home. Wearing a hat and face covering, the person appears to glance directly at the camera before moving on.
The suspect arrived shortly after midnight and remained at the property for roughly one hour and 50 minutes. After the killing, the intruder reportedly left with the weapon, the victim’s bag and another unidentified item.
From that point on, the figure vanished from the village’s CCTV network.
Investigators believe the culprit may have been familiar with the area, the placement of nearby cameras and Seo’s daily routine. Possible motives range from a personal grudge or financial dispute to robbery or even a crime carried out at someone else’s request, but no theory has yet produced a decisive lead.
SBS investigative program ‘Unanswered Questions’ revisits the limited footage in search of details that may have been overlooked. Specialists examine the suspect’s build and clothing, while also studying the person’s gait and the shape of their footwear.
The program also commissions a facial reconstruction based on the obscured figure in the infrared footage. The resulting image will be revealed publicly for the first time during the broadcast.
