Distant cities and unfamiliar lives arrive prepackaged as images, while encounters with difference are flattened into experiences we already know how to anticipate. In a culture flooded with information, otherness is rarely allowed to linger.
Victor Segalen’s ‘Essay on Exoticism: An Aesthetics of Diversity’ asks readers to pause at precisely this point. Rather than rushing toward understanding, Segalen urges us to recover the ability to live with distance—and to accept what remains beyond our grasp.
Composed of notes, letters and fragments written between 1904 and 1918, the posthumously published work is not a finished theoretical treatise. Its appeal lies elsewhere: it preserves the movement of a mind still testing and refining its ideas.
For Segalen, exoticism is neither a matter of taste nor a fascination with faraway places. It is a way of perceiving. It means recognizing difference without trying to erase it, and allowing the tension between the self and the other to remain alive.
The book does not set out to explain unfamiliar worlds. It resists the impulse to explain them away. What it offers is not a faster route to understanding the other, but the capacity to remain attentive when understanding is incomplete.
