[News Culture] Christopher Nolan has a new box office champion in Korea.
The Odyssey stormed into theaters with 291,359 admissions on Wednesday, immediately claiming the top spot and delivering the strongest opening of Nolan's career in the Korean market.
According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the epic adventure has already amassed 293,726 admissions, including preview screenings.
The launch outpaced the Korean openings of every previous Nolan film, including Tenet, Inception, The Dark Knight, Dunkirk and Interstellar. It also debuted ahead of recent domestic hits such as The King Who Lived and Colony.
Inspired by Homer's epic, the film follows Odysseus as he battles gods, monsters and impossible odds on his long voyage home after the Trojan War. Nolan directs from his own screenplay, with Matt Damon and Charlize Theron leading the cast.
After ruling the box office for a week, Spider-Man: Brand New Day settled for second place with 273,994 admissions. Its cumulative total climbed to 4,408,155.
Animated feature Heartsping: Legend of the Whale Gem enjoyed a strong debut in third, drawing 73,032 moviegoers and reaching 100,442 admissions including previews.
Na Hong-jin's Hope slipped to fourth with 29,925 admissions, bringing its total to 4,265,623.
Minions & Monsters completed the top five with 5,292 admissions, raising its cumulative total to 744,023.
