Made in Korea: Season 2 returns September 9, picking up nine years after the events of the first season. Director Woo Min-ho says the new chapter will be defined less by spectacle than by what time has done to the people at the center of its ruthless power struggle.
Baek Ki-tae, played by Hyun Bin, is now closer than ever to the top. Jang Geon-young, played by Jung Woo-sung, has spent nearly a decade preparing his revenge. Between them stands Baek Ki-hyun, played by Woo Do-hwan, whose ambitions could upset the balance on both sides.
For Woo, the series has always belonged to its characters.
The director said the most compelling part of the new season is seeing how familiar figures have been reshaped by nine years of ambition, loss and resentment. The actors approached that time jump not as a simple change in appearance, but as something that had altered the way their characters move, speak and confront one another.
Ki-tae may have gained power, but success has made his position more dangerous rather than more secure. Geon-young returns with revenge no longer burning impulsively, but sharpened into patience. Ki-hyun enters the conflict with his own agenda, making him far more than a supporting player in the rivalry between the two men.
Their return is designed to feel familiar and unsettling at the same time.
The years have also rewritten the relationships around them.
Former alliances no longer carry the same meaning, while new arrivals bring motives that complicate an already unstable political landscape. Characters may stand together when their interests align, then turn on one another the moment those interests shift.
Woo said the writing process began with a simple question: what does each person want now?
That question drives the season’s alliances, betrayals and sudden reversals. Trust has little value in this world. Survival depends on reading the room faster than everyone else and knowing when an ally has become a liability.
The tension is expected to play out not only through open confrontation, but through glances, pauses and conversations loaded with unspoken calculation. Woo’s direction places the psychological battle at the center of the drama, allowing even quiet scenes to carry the threat of collapse.
The cast’s chemistry is another key part of that tension.
After building these characters across two seasons, the actors return with the weight of everything that happened between them—and everything that happened off-screen during the nine-year gap. Their performances are shaped by those accumulated histories, giving each reunion and confrontation an added layer of suspicion.
Woo described his collaboration with Hyun Bin as almost instinctive, saying their rhythm had become so strong that they could understand each other with minimal explanation.
That connection will be crucial as Ki-tae moves deeper into a world where power offers no protection. The closer he gets to controlling everything, the more vulnerable he becomes to the people waiting for him to fall.
Made in Korea: Season 2 will unfold across six episodes. Two episodes will premiere on September 9, followed by two on September 16 and the final two on September 23.
