‘The Apartment Job’: Ji Sung Turns Away From ₩10 Billion in Tearful Cliffhanger

The August 1 episode followed Hae-gang, played by Ji Sung, as he entered the final stage of Lee Chung-won’s test to become his trusted money keeper. The job could give him the leverage he desperately needed, but news that his older brother Park Yong-man, played by Jung Jin-young, had only three months to live changed everything.

By the closing moments, Hae-gang was no longer chasing the cash. He was racing to save his family.

Hae-gang Makes His Move

Hae-gang approached Chung-won, played by Park Byung-eun, and openly asked to take over as his vault keeper. Chung-won refused to hand over that kind of power easily, warning that competence alone would not earn Hae-gang the key.

At the same time, Hae-gang was running out of options elsewhere. His request to visit Yong-man was denied on medical grounds, and his attempt to secure his brother’s release on bail ended with a blunt refusal from the police investigation chief.

Even after being struck across the face, Hae-gang did not back down. The moment made clear that he was prepared to take far greater risks if that was what it took to bring Yong-man home.

The Scheme Behind the Reserve Hike

A broken elevator offered Hae-gang the opening he needed.

After becoming trapped inside with Kang Ha-ri, played by Ha Yoon-kyung, he seized on her frustration with the building’s neglected facilities and turned it into a larger strategy.

At the residents’ meeting, Hae-gang proposed doubling the apartment complex’s long-term repair reserve contributions. The plan immediately drew opposition, but a string of elevator failures shifted public opinion in his favor.

He called an emergency meeting, argued that a full replacement could no longer be postponed and ultimately pushed the increase through.

Chung-won was impressed — until the episode revealed that Hae-gang had anticipated, and possibly engineered, the elevator crisis from the start. The victory showed just how calculating he had become when the stakes demanded it.

A ₩10 Billion Delivery and a Name Among the Dead

Chung-won already knew why Hae-gang was desperate. Aware that he needed ₩10 billion to free Yong-man, he offered him one last assignment: deliver the same amount in cash without incident.

Before setting out, Hae-gang received new information from Kim Kyung-nam, played by Jung Soon-won, who had been tracing the disappearance of Seo Kang-won, played by Baek Hyun-jin.

The trail led to Taegowon, where Hae-gang arrived to collect the money. There, among a row of trees, he found one marked with Seo Kang-won’s name.

Manager Kim, played by Noh Jung-hyun, claimed the trees commemorated people who had sacrificed themselves for Taegowon. The explanation only made the discovery more disturbing, suggesting that Kang-won’s disappearance may be part of something far larger — and far more dangerous — than Hae-gang first believed.

The Call That Changes Everything

With ₩10 billion loaded into his vehicle, Hae-gang appeared poised to complete the delivery and secure Chung-won’s trust.

Then the police investigation chief called.

Yong-man had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given three months to live. The chief warned that Hae-gang would need to act quickly if he did not want his brother to die behind bars.

Hae-gang looked at the bags of cash, turned the car around and made his choice.

“I’m bringing ₩10 billion right now, so release my brother immediately,” he shouted into the phone.

The money was supposed to be Chung-won’s final test. Instead, it became Hae-gang’s only remaining chance to save the man he considered family. Ji Sung closed the episode in tears, driving at full speed as loyalty overtook ambition.

Ha-ri Stops Running From Failure

Episode 7 also gave Ha-ri room to confront a different kind of loss.

After admitting to her sister Kang Ha-jung, played by Ryu Hyun-kyung, that she was not actually a lawyer, Ha-ri was left to process the shame and disappointment she had spent years trying to hide.

Hae-gang told her that failure can reveal things success often conceals — the people who remain beside you and the people you are responsible for protecting.

His words helped Ha-ri look at her sister’s sacrifices differently. She admitted that only after failing had she begun to understand Ha-jung’s life, and she promised to pursue her own dream without continuing to depend on someone else’s sacrifice.

While Hae-gang’s story ended in a desperate race against time, Ha-ri’s marked a quieter turn toward accountability and change.
