'Dance at the Museum' Turns Kim Tschang-Yeul Art Museum Into a Moving Stage

[News Culture] Jeju’s Kim Tschang-Yeul Art Museum is moving beyond the conventional gallery experience with “Dance at the Museum,” a live art performance that brings contemporary dance directly into its exhibition spaces.

The performance will begin at 2 p.m. on Aug. 5, unfolding across the museum’s lobby, galleries, corridors and central courtyard.

The event is part of the “2026 Kim Tschang-Yeul Art Museum Art Stage” program. By allowing performance and visual art to inhabit the same space, the project aims to reposition the museum as a multidisciplinary cultural venue while creating new opportunities for collaboration with Jeju-based artists.

Contemporary dancer and choreographer Ki Eun-joo is directing the project. After completing her graduate studies in dance performance at Korea National University of Arts, Ki settled in Jeju in 2017 and has since worked across dance education and performance. She also leads the nonprofit improvisational dance collective Muyong Dabang and Tanzhaus in Jeju.

Rather than remaining in fixed seats, visitors will follow the performers through the building, encountering each sequence as movement, architecture and exhibition space continually reshape one another. A post-performance talk with the cast will also be held for visitors who register in advance.

Aug. 5 has been designated as a Culture Day, allowing visitors to view the museum’s 10th-anniversary special exhibition, “Kim Tschang-Yeul, Painter of Paris,” free of charge.

The exhibition explores the life and work of the late Kim Tschang-Yeul, internationally renowned for his signature water-drop paintings, with particular attention to the artistic world he developed during his years in Paris. Together, the exhibition and live performance offer visitors a chance to experience the museum not simply as a place to observe art, but as a space activated by bodies, movement and time.
