[News Culture] Beethoven reshaped the language of Western classical music. Building on the discipline of the Classical era, he pushed its forms toward Romanticism, filling them with conflict, resilience and triumph.

His music remains compelling because emotional intensity never comes at the expense of structure. Even at its most dramatic, every gesture is carefully constructed. That balance has kept Beethoven at the heart of the concert repertoire for more than two centuries.

Ahead of the 200th anniversary of his death in 2027, Seoul Arts Center will present SAC Saturday Concert — Preview Beethoven at the Concert Hall on Aug. 15 and Oct. 17. The two programs offer an early survey of the composer’s orchestral world through symphonies and concertos that reveal very different sides of his music.

The August concert will feature conductor and commentator Seok-won Hong with the Wald Ensemble in Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 8 and 4.

The Eighth Symphony is among Beethoven’s most playful scores, driven by rhythmic wit, unexpected turns and a lively spirit of experimentation. The Fourth offers a different kind of energy, pairing brightness and balance with moments of quiet tension.

Together, the two works move beyond the familiar image of Beethoven as a composer of relentless struggle. They reveal his humor, flexibility and instinct for proportion, qualities that are sometimes overshadowed by the monumentality of his best-known symphonies.

The October concert will bring together the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Byung-wook Lee and pianist Tae-hyung Kim.

The first half features Piano Concerto No. 5, widely known as the “Emperor.” Grand in scale and brilliant in its solo writing, the concerto places the piano and orchestra in a constantly shifting exchange rather than a conventional contest between soloist and ensemble.

Symphony No. 6, the “Pastoral,” follows in the second half. Inspired by Beethoven’s affection for the natural world, the symphony unfolds through flowing melodies, open textures and scenes of rural calm, interrupted by a vividly drawn storm before returning to a mood of gratitude and peace.

Placed side by side, the two works capture the breadth of Beethoven’s musical imagination. The “Emperor” projects confidence and architectural grandeur, while the “Pastoral” turns inward, finding drama and lyricism in the rhythms of nature.

Beethoven’s music continues to hold a central place in the programs of major orchestras around the world. Its staying power lies in the way it combines universal emotions with extraordinary formal precision, allowing each generation of performers and listeners to encounter the works anew.

The Preview Beethoven series offers audiences an opportunity to revisit that legacy ahead of the 2027 bicentenary. Through four works spanning wit, grandeur, lyricism and reflection, the concerts will trace why Beethoven’s music still feels immediate nearly 200 years after his death.
