[News Culture] Park Hae-il is returning to the big screen after four years, taking on the role of a veteran journalist in Assassin(s).

The film follows three people drawn into the search for the truth behind a shooting that sends shock waves across South Korea. Park plays Jae-hwan, the head of a newspaper's city desk, whose instincts tell him there is more to the case than the official account.

Jae-hwan keeps pressing even as censorship and outside pressure begin closing in around the newsroom. Rather than retreat, he follows the inconsistencies, questions what does not add up and pushes the investigation forward.

The role plays to Park's strength for controlled, interior performances. Films such as The Host, The Fortress, Decision to Leave and Hansan: Rising Dragon have often placed him at the center of characters defined less by grand gestures than by what they hold back.

That restraint becomes part of Jae-hwan's authority. The character is not written simply as a crusading reporter, but as an experienced editor whose judgment has been sharpened by years inside the newsroom. As the pressure mounts, his refusal to compromise becomes central to the film's tension.

Park also brings a quieter human side to the role, balancing Jae-hwan's professional resolve with the weight of what it means to keep pursuing a story when the consequences become personal.

Assassin(s) reunites Park with director Hur Jin-ho, a decade after the two worked together on The Last Princess. Released in 2016, the historical drama drew nearly 6 million admissions in South Korea.

The film is scheduled to open in Korean theaters during the Chuseok holiday season.
