[News Culture] A trail of anonymous letters leads into memories of friendship, hurt and healing in Your Letter, a new Korean musical opening in Seoul this fall.
The story began as a Naver Webtoon in 2018. It follows transfer student Lee So-ri, who comes across an unsigned letter and starts following the clues inside. Each new message draws her deeper into a story that began before she arrived, gradually revealing the people and memories behind the letters.
The webtoon earned a 9.98 reader rating and found a wide audience with its understated storytelling and delicate artwork. It has since been adapted into an animated feature, and now makes the move to live theater.
Rather than recreating the webtoon panel by panel, the musical builds its own world around the letters. Music and illusion carry the story between the present and the memories So-ri uncovers, while four actors move through multiple roles over the course of each performance.
That compact format gives the production room to shift quickly between characters, timelines and points of view as the mystery takes shape.
Jeon Hye-joo, Lee A-jin and Kim Dan-i share the role of Lee So-ri, whose discovery of the first letter sets everything in motion.
Jung Wook-jin, Lee Jin-woo and Ryu Chan-yeol alternate as Jung Ho-yeon, the boy at the heart of the mystery. Lee Dong-soo, Kim Joon-sik and Park Sang-hyuk play Park Dong-soon, with Jung Baek-sun, Lee Joo-chan and Choi Ki-jung cast as Ahn Seung-gyu.
Kim Soo-a wrote the stage adaptation, with music by Min Chan-hong. Pyo Sang-a handles both adaptation and direction.
Magician Yu Ho-jin joins the production as illusion designer. His work gives physical shape to the moments when memory and reality begin to overlap, an idea already prominent in the musical’s poster, which frames the story as “our treasure hunt, beginning again.”
Your Letter opens Sept. 16 at Plus Theater in Seoul and runs through Nov. 29.
