[News Culture] “Hell’s Kitchen” has arrived in Seoul — with Alicia Keys herself there to mark the occasion.
The musical opened at GS Arts Center on July 24, introducing Korean audiences to the semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story built around Keys’ music and memories of New York.
Park Ji-won, Son Seung-yeon, K.Will and Tei headline the Korean production, bringing a mix of vocal firepower and theatrical weight to a show that moves freely between family drama, first love, youthful rebellion and the pull of music.
Set in 1990s Hell’s Kitchen, the musical follows Ali, a teenager caught between her mother’s expectations and a growing desire to shape a life of her own. Music becomes both her escape and her way forward.
That sense of movement runs through the Korean staging. Video, lighting and an LED-based set keep the city in constant motion, shifting between apartments, streets and performance spaces without breaking the show’s momentum.
Keys’ songs are not treated as a greatest-hits playlist. Instead, they are folded into the characters’ lives, taking on different emotional meanings as Ali’s world expands. A live band gives the production an added pulse, at times pushing the atmosphere closer to a concert than a conventional musical.
Keys traveled to Seoul for the premiere after remaining closely involved with the project from its early development through production. She attended final rehearsals and the dress rehearsal before joining the company onstage after the first performance.
Her curtain-call appearance drew one of the night’s biggest reactions.
Addressing the audience, Keys said she was moved to see the story connect beyond language and geography, and expressed hope that the musical would leave audiences with a sense that their own possibilities remain open.
More than a decade in the making, “Hell’s Kitchen” draws on Keys’ music and elements of her own youth while telling a broader story about growing up, finding independence and discovering a voice.
The Korean production runs through Nov. 8 at GS Arts Center.
