‘Frankenstein’ Heads to Jangchung Arena for a Two-Night Musical Spectacle

[News Culture] Frankenstein is leaving the traditional theater behind for two nights at one of Seoul’s largest indoor venues.

Frankenstein: The Musical Concert will take over Jangchung Arena on Aug. 1 and 2, bringing together Kyuhyun, Park Eun-tae, Lee Ji-hye and Jang Eun-a for a special concert built on the music and drama of the long-running Korean original musical.

The Seoul dates follow performances in Daegu and Macao and mark the latest installment of Stage Concert Series I. Rather than simply restaging the musical in a larger venue, the production has been conceived specifically for an arena, with an extended stage, massive LED screens and visuals designed to reach every corner of the space.

Live music will be another major draw. An 18-piece orchestra and band will be led by Brandon Lee, the composer and music director of Frankenstein, giving the show’s signature numbers the weight and sweep of a full-scale concert.

The casting brings back a combination already familiar to Frankenstein fans. Kyuhyun takes on the dual roles of Victor and Jacques, while Park Eun-tae returns as Henri and the Monster. Lee Ji-hye appears as Julia and Catherine, with Jang Eun-a playing Ellen and Eva.

All four previously shared the screen in Frankenstein: The Musical Live, the filmed performance released last year. During its promotional run, Kyuhyun and Park Eun-tae jokingly promised fans a concert if the film proved successful. A year later, that promise has become a two-night event at Jangchung Arena.

The four leads will be joined by 18 ensemble members and dancers. The expanded company is expected to give the production more freedom to move between the theatrical intensity of Frankenstein and the energy of a live concert.

Frankenstein has grown into one of the defining titles of Korea’s original musical scene. Inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic novel, the Korean production centers on Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant scientist driven by the ambition to create an immortal soldier, and the tragic chain of events unleashed by the life he creates.

Written and directed by Wang Yong-beom and composed by Brandon Lee, the musical has remained a major presence on the Korean stage for more than a decade, culminating in its 10th-anniversary production in 2024.
