The upcoming film "The Journey to Gyeongju" follows a mother and her three daughters who, after waiting eight years for justice, set out on a deadly journey of revenge for Gyeongju, the youngest daughter who never returned from a school trip.
The newly released teaser opens with Ok-sil (Lee Jung-eun), the mother, wearing a grim expression. Her three daughters — Jang-ju (Kong Hyo-jin), Young-ju (Park So-dam) and Dong-ju (Lee Yeon) — are then seen struggling to move something heavy and unidentified.
At the heart of the story is a startling premise: the family has kidnapped the man who murdered Ok-sil's daughter.
A yellow van speeding endlessly down a fog-covered road, an awkward family portrait in matching outfits and the four women inexplicably playing tag beside a rice field in broad daylight add an unsettlingly comic edge. Meanwhile, the mysterious figure concealed beneath black plastic raises an even darker question about what the family has planned.
The teaser drives home the film's twisted revenge setup with the lines, "The trip is the alibi. Revenge is the destination," and, "A family trip planned to kill is about to begin."
What follows is a volatile mix of desperate pursuit, car chases and bruising hand-to-hand combat, pointing to a revenge story that shifts freely between dark comedy, crime and thriller territory.
"The Journey to Gyeongju" marks director Kim Mi-jo's first commercial feature following her acclaimed debut "Gull." Even before its theatrical release, the film drew international attention with invitations to major festivals including the Hawaii International Film Festival and the Florence Korea Film Fest.
"The Journey to Gyeongju" opens in South Korean theaters on Aug. 26.
