The Journey to Gyeongju has locked in its theatrical release for Aug. 26, unveiling its first official posters that hint at a revenge story hidden beneath the façade of a family vacation.
Directed by Kim Mi-jo, the film follows four women who set out on a carefully planned journey eight years after losing their youngest daughter, Gyeongju, during a school trip. What appears to be an ordinary family getaway gradually reveals itself as an elaborate revenge plot targeting the person responsible for her death.
The first poster places the family inside a yellow van, presenting each member with a distinct presence. Mother Oksil (Lee Jung-eun) quietly clutches a rosary in prayer, eldest daughter Jangju (Gong Hyo-jin) watches the road with measured caution, second daughter Youngju (Park So-dam) tests a disposable camera intended to establish an alibi, while youngest daughter Dongju (Lee Yeon) sleeps peacefully in the back seat. A blood-red human silhouette cutting across the image, together with the tagline, "We kidnapped a murderer," quickly shatters the illusion of an ordinary road trip.
The second poster shifts to Donggung and Wolji, one of Gyeongju's best-known historic landmarks. Wearing matching "FAMILY" T-shirts, the four women smile for a commemorative photograph like any other tourists. The cheerful image, however, conceals a revenge plan eight years in the making. Accompanied by the line, "The trip is the alibi. The real purpose is revenge. We kidnapped a murderer," and splashes of blood, the poster reframes the family snapshot as the cover story for a meticulously planned crime.
The Journey to Gyeongju marks Kim Mi-jo's first commercial feature following her acclaimed debut Gull. Ahead of its domestic release, the film has already drawn international attention with invitations to major events including the Hawaii International Film Festival and the Florence Korea Film Fest.
The film opens in South Korean theaters on Aug. 26.
