The Seoul Design Foundation has officially launched DDP Open Stage, a recurring public performance program designed to transform Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) into an interactive cultural platform for emerging artists and local residents.
Held at DDP's Oullim Square, the initiative aims to provide performance opportunities for up-and-coming musicians while creating an open stage where visitors can actively participate rather than simply observe.
Ahead of the official launch, the foundation tested a variety of outdoor cultural programs beginning in April. A swing dance event on April 22 featured live music by band Swingerie and invited members of the public to learn choreography and join the performance, offering an early glimpse of the plaza's potential as a participatory arts venue.
The first official Open Stage event followed on June 17 with Star Busking Night, which showcased performances by 16 emerging artists and transformed a public urban space into a live music venue.
Building on the positive response, two signature programs are scheduled for July. Star Busking Night returns on July 16 as a showcase for indie musicians and rising performers. On July 24, Citizen Dance Night will invite solo dancers, crews, hobby groups and families to take center stage in a format designed around direct public participation.
Unlike traditional audience-focused performances, the programs emphasize spontaneous interaction between performers and attendees, encouraging visitors to engage with artists in a more immediate and dynamic environment.
The foundation plans to establish a regular schedule moving forward, with busking events held on the third Wednesday of every month and community dance programs taking place on the final Friday of each month.
Organizers expect the initiative to further position DDP as a year-round gathering place for cultural exchange, expanding its role beyond exhibitions and design programming into a more community-driven cultural destination.
