Esther Kwon's Journey Continues, One Fundamental at a Time

The practice range is quiet in the early morning. Esther Kwon is already there.

For the 17-year-old prospect, the routine has become a constant. Long before tournament rounds begin, she is working through the same process — checking her rhythm, refining her swing and repeating the fundamentals that form the foundation of her game.

The focus on repetition is no accident.

Several years ago, Kwon lost her father, the person who first introduced her to golf and helped shape her development as a young player. The loss disrupted a routine that had once felt natural, leaving her searching for stability both on and off the course.

What remained was a piece of advice he often shared.

"When problems arise, go back to the basics."

Rather than looking for quick solutions, Kwon returned to the fundamentals. She rebuilt her rhythm, revisited the details of her swing and committed herself to the daily process of improvement. Progress came gradually, but over time she found her footing again.

Today, Kwon's development continues with another trusted figure by her side: coach Choi Yong-wook.

A longtime friend of her late father and a veteran of the professional golf circuit, Choi brings a practical approach to mentorship. His guidance often comes in brief conversations rather than lengthy instruction — observations about course strategy, wind conditions or shot selection drawn from years of experience.

Their partnership has developed naturally through practice and competition. There is little need for elaborate discussion. Trust and understanding have grown through the work they continue to put in together.

Recent tournament appearances have provided Kwon with valuable opportunities to test that work in competition.

While results remain secondary to the larger process, signs of progress are becoming increasingly visible. Her short game has grown more reliable, her driving distance has improved and she has shown a greater ability to remain composed when rounds become difficult.

At the same time, Kwon remains aware of the areas that still require attention. Iron-shot accuracy and adapting ball flight to changing wind conditions continue to be part of her ongoing development.

For Kwon, however, the emphasis remains on growth rather than immediate results.

Even after formal training sessions end, she is often among the last players to leave the range, repeating shots and reviewing the day's work. The goal is not simply to perform well in practice, but to carry those habits and instincts onto the course when they matter most.

Golf ultimately requires players to make their own decisions. Every shot demands judgment, and every round adds another layer of experience.

Kwon is still accumulating those experiences.

Years after her journey was interrupted, she continues to move forward — steadily, patiently and at her own pace.

One fundamental at a time.
