ENA's Doctor on the Edge reached a key turning point in Episode 8, advancing its central romance while laying the groundwork for a new wave of challenges facing both its characters and the island community.
The June 23 broadcast followed Do Ji-ui (Lee Jae-wook) and Yook Ha-ri (Shin Ye-eun) as they moved closer to acknowledging feelings that had remained unresolved for much of the season. According to Nielsen Korea, the episode recorded a nationwide rating of 4.8%, peaking at 5.6%, to rank first among Monday-Tuesday dramas and across its timeslot.
Much of the episode centered on Ha-ri's struggle with grief following the loss of Oh Mi-ja (Kil Hae-yeon). Attempting to cope on her own, she pushed Ji-ui away and insisted that he stop worrying about her. Ji-ui, however, remained unwilling to distance himself despite her efforts to end their growing emotional connection.
Elsewhere, daily life on Pyeondong Island became increasingly complicated. A dispute surrounding construction of the island's helicopter pad led to fresh tensions among residents, while an accident left Hyun Chi-yeon (Hong Min-gi) injured. Additional complications arose when water damage forced Ha-ri to temporarily relocate to government housing, further intertwining the lives of the drama's key characters.
The episode also brought greater clarity to the relationship between Ha-ri and Chi-yeon. While Chi-yeon continued to wrestle with his feelings, Ha-ri made it clear that she viewed him with gratitude rather than romantic interest. The exchange effectively closed one chapter of the series' love triangle while reinforcing where her heart ultimately lay.
A separate storyline unfolded during the helicopter pad inauguration ceremony, where concern spread after Lee Hong-sik (Kim Jong-chil), a Parkinson's disease patient, suddenly went missing. Ji-ui joined the search and safely located him, but the incident left a lasting emotional impact on Ha-ri as she reflected on experiences from her own past.
The emotional breakthrough arrived late in the episode.
While helping organize the belongings left behind by Oh Mi-ja, Ji-ui finally voiced what he had been unable to say for weeks, admitting that he could no longer pretend indifference. The confession prompted Ha-ri to stop holding back as well, leading the pair to openly acknowledge their feelings and share their first kiss.
The moment marked a significant shift for the series, transforming a long-developing emotional connection into an established relationship heading into the second half of the drama.
The episode's closing moments, however, suggested that new obstacles may be approaching.
County governor Go Chang-mok (Kim Hae-gon) appeared increasingly uncomfortable with the growing attention surrounding the island's public health doctors and the troubled inauguration ceremony. At the same time, Yong Ju-cheon (Kim Yoon-woo) spotted an unidentified man visiting Eom Jeong-seon (Lee Soo-kyung), introducing another mystery that appears likely to shape upcoming episodes.
With its central romance now moving into a new phase and multiple sources of conflict beginning to surface, Doctor on the Edge appears set to shift its focus from emotional uncertainty to the consequences that follow.
