Shin Min-a is returning to the screen with a markedly different energy.
Known for balancing warmth and emotional depth in projects such as Karma, Our Blues and Diva, the actress takes on a colder, more unsettling presence in the suspense thriller The Eyes, revealing yet another facet of her range as a performer.
Directed by Yeom Ji-ho, The Eyes follows Seo-jin, a photographer gradually losing her eyesight due to a hereditary condition. While investigating the mysterious death of her twin sister, she is drawn into a truth far more disturbing than she expected.
Shin plays both Seo-jin and her twin sister Seo-in, a ceramic artist whose death becomes the catalyst for the story. Moving between the two roles, she serves as the emotional and psychological anchor of the film.
Abandoning the bright and approachable image often associated with her previous work, Shin instead embraces a character defined by relentless determination, fear and emotional exhaustion. Her performance captures the mounting pressure of a woman racing to uncover the truth before darkness completely overtakes her vision.
Particularly striking is the actress's portrayal of Seo-jin as her world gradually narrows. As her eyesight fades, the character becomes increasingly dependent on sound and physical sensation, heightening both her vulnerability and her resolve. Through restrained expressions and tense physicality, Shin sustains the film's atmosphere of unease and suspense.
The performance marks another notable turn in the actress's evolving body of work, further cementing her presence in darker, genre-driven storytelling.
The Eyes opens in South Korea on June 24.
