Musical Paganini has begun its latest run on a high note, earning enthusiastic audience reactions during its opening weekend.
The production opened June 20 at Hongik University Art Center Grand Theater, where audiences responded with sustained applause and a standing ovation at curtain call. The strong reception reflected the show's distinctive blend of dramatic storytelling and live musical performance.
Rather than focusing solely on the legendary reputation of Niccolò Paganini, this season explores the human story behind the myth. At the center of the narrative is Achille, Paganini’s son, who seeks to challenge the rumors and misconceptions that followed his father throughout his life. Through his journey, the musical paints a portrait of a celebrated artist caught between admiration and suspicion, fame and isolation.
A defining feature of the production is its actor-musician format. Cast members perform live violin pieces on stage, integrating musicianship directly into the storytelling. The score moves fluidly between classical and rock influences, while signature numbers including “Have You Seen the Devil?” and “Dies Irae” heighten the drama. Combined with the production’s double revolving stage, the musical creates seamless transitions that enhance both the narrative and visual experience.
The production is also expanding audience engagement beyond the stage. Opening day featured a special mini-performance and cast greeting commemorating violinist KoN’s 100th appearance in the role. Additional promotions, including Curtain Call Week and a Welcome Coupon Package, are scheduled throughout the run.
July programming will introduce further fan-focused events, including Casino Day, special curtain call performances and autograph sessions designed to bring audiences closer to the production.
Paganini is scheduled to run through Aug. 30. With its emphasis on live performance and actor-driven musicianship, the production is positioning itself as one of the standout offerings of this summer’s musical theater season.
