Director Kim Kyu-tae, known for his nuanced explorations of human psychology in projects such as The Trunk, Our Blues and It's Okay, That's Love, returns with Netflix's upcoming suspense drama Notes from the Last Row, premiering June 26.
The series follows Heo Moon-oh (Choi Min-sik), a failed novelist and Korean literature professor who becomes increasingly captivated by the extraordinary talent of Lee Kang (Choi Hyun-wook), a gifted student seated in the last row of his classroom. As their relationship deepens through a private writing mentorship, the boundaries between reality, fiction and obsession begin to blur.
According to Kim, the drama's appeal lies in its exploration of turbulent inner worlds and shifting psychological dynamics.
"If viewers follow the characters' emotional upheavals and inner conflicts, they'll find themselves deeply immersed in the story," the director said.
A defining feature of the series is its layered narrative structure. The story unfolds through both the relationship between Heo Moon-oh and Lee Kang and the fictional worlds created within Lee Kang's writing. Kim noted that maintaining a seamless flow between these narrative levels was one of the production's key creative challenges.
"Because the story contains another story within it, I felt the boundaries needed to remain fluid," he explained. "We paid close attention to pacing, storytelling rhythm and the performances in order to sustain that immersion."
Newly released stills further highlight the drama's psychological tension. Heo Moon-oh appears weighed down by frustration, inferiority and disappointment, while Lee Kang's intense and unreadable gaze hints at hidden motivations beneath his quiet exterior.
The supporting cast adds further complexity to the narrative. Heo Joon-ho plays Kim Soo-hoon, a successful author whose seemingly perfect life stands in stark contrast to Moon-oh's struggles. Kim Yoon-jin portrays Ahn Eun-joo, Soo-hoon's wife, while Jin Kyung takes on the role of Jo Hyun-sook, Moon-oh's wife, whose growing curiosity about her husband's private literary lessons draws her deeper into the unfolding drama.
As personal ambitions, jealousy and hidden desires collide, Notes from the Last Row promises a psychologically intricate story anchored by a powerhouse ensemble cast and Kim Kyu-tae's meticulous direction.
