In Korean cuisine, sesame oil plays a defining role in completing a dish’s flavor profile. Whether used to season vegetables, finish soups, or enhance rice dishes, a final drizzle of sesame oil is often regarded as an essential touch that embodies the character of Korean cooking. Its distinctive nutty aroma not only harmonizes ingredients but also stimulates the senses, elevating the overall dining experience.
As Korean culture continues to expand globally, a wider range of Korean dishes has become familiar to international consumers. While bibimbap has long enjoyed worldwide recognition, kimbap has recently emerged as one of the most popular Korean foods through the influence of short-form video content and other K-content platforms. As overseas consumers attempt to recreate these dishes at home, sesame oil has naturally become a key ingredient on shopping lists.
According to recent trade statistics released by the Korea Customs Service, Korean sesame oil exports reached a record high. Between January and April 2026, export value rose 37.0 percent year-over-year to $6.14 million, while export volume increased 47.6 percent to 657 tons.
The United States remained the largest export destination, accounting for 41.7 percent of total exports with $2.6 million in shipments and maintaining its position as the top market for the 14th consecutive year. Canada followed with exports surging 249.0 percent to $600,000. Additional growth was recorded in Taiwan (7.6 percent), Australia (7.4 percent), and the Netherlands (5.3 percent), highlighting expanding demand across Asia, Oceania, and Europe. Korean sesame oil is now exported to 62 countries worldwide.
The sharp rise in exports reflects a combination of global health-conscious eating trends and growing recognition of Korean sesame oil’s quality. Demand has increased among consumers seeking plant-based and environmentally conscious food options, particularly in developed markets where minimally processed products and clean-label ingredients are gaining popularity.
Much like olive oil is commonly used to finish salads and seafood dishes in Western cuisine, Korean sesame oil has increasingly been adopted as a premium “finishing oil.” Manufacturers have also strengthened their competitiveness through international certifications such as organic, halal, and kosher standards, while introducing user-friendly packaging formats, including squeeze tubes designed for local consumer preferences.
The export performance underscores a broader shift in global interest toward Korean food. Consumers are moving beyond simply enjoying Korean dishes at restaurants and are increasingly purchasing ingredients needed to recreate those flavors at home. Strong overseas sales of established K-food categories such as instant noodles and sauces have also helped drive complementary demand for sesame oil, positioning it as one of the next promising growth products in Korea’s food export portfolio.
Backed by distinctive flavor characteristics and rigorous quality standards, Korean sesame oil has secured a foothold in premium retail channels and online marketplaces abroad. Industry observers are now watching closely to see whether it can move beyond a trend-driven product and establish a lasting presence within the global specialty oils market.
