National Museum of Korea Positions Conservation Science Center as Eurasian Heritage Hub at Inaugural Museum Directors Forum

The preservation of historical artifacts remains one of the most pressing challenges facing museums worldwide, as collections are continually exposed to physical deterioration and environmental damage. Against that backdrop, a new framework for multinational cooperation aimed at protecting cultural heritage across the Eurasian continent is beginning to take shape.

The National Museum of Korea announced on June 15 that Director General Yoo Hong-jun attended the First Eurasian Museum Directors Forum, hosted by the National Chinggis Khaan Museum of Mongolia, as the representative of Northeast Asia's national museums.

The international gathering was organized to establish collaborative networks among major museums across Eurasia and to explore long-term strategies for safeguarding cultural heritage. Held under the theme “Eurasian Exchange: Gateways to the Future and Multilateral Cooperation,” the forum brought together museum directors and heritage specialists from more than 40 institutions across roughly 20 countries. The event was jointly hosted by Mongolia’s Presidential Office, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, and the National Chinggis Khaan Museum.

At the forum, Yoo introduced the museum’s Conservation Science Center, a 9,000-square-meter, three-story facility that opened in 2025. He described the center as a “General Hospital for Cultural Heritage,” where specialists in metals, ceramics, paintings, textiles, stone artifacts, and murals employ advanced scientific equipment to diagnose and treat damaged objects.

The center currently integrates virtual conservation treatments, data-driven digital analysis, and smart remote diagnostic technologies into its preservation workflow. According to Yoo, continued development of remote diagnostic systems could enable real-time conservation support for cultural heritage sites across Eurasia, overcoming geographic barriers and creating new opportunities for multilateral technical cooperation.

The museum argued that international collaboration rooted in scientific expertise is becoming increasingly essential as institutions move beyond isolated restoration efforts toward more systematic and data-based conservation management.

The National Museum of Korea currently houses approximately 2.5 million artifacts, making it the seventh-largest museum collection in the world. The institution also welcomed more than 6.5 million visitors last year, ranking third globally in annual attendance.

Against that backdrop, the museum’s proposal to establish a practical technical cooperation network across Eurasia signals a broader ambition: positioning Korea as a central hub for what could be described as “cultural heritage diplomacy,” linking nations through shared conservation expertise rather than political boundaries.

The forum is expected to serve as an important first step toward expanded human-resource exchanges and joint research initiatives involving Silk Road artifacts. Given the diverse preservation environments and conservation challenges faced by participating countries, the sharing of standardized data-analysis methods and digital diagnostic technologies could significantly strengthen heritage protection efforts throughout the region.

Attention will now turn to whether the discussions can evolve beyond dialogue into concrete technology transfers, joint conservation projects, and sustained multinational partnerships.
