Steven Spielberg's latest science-fiction thriller Disclosure Day is showing signs of becoming the next major force at the box office, climbing to No. 1 in overall advance ticket sales.

According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing system on June 8, Disclosure Day ranked first in overall reservations as of 7 a.m., surpassing major domestic and international competitors including The Swarm, Wild Sing, and Backrooms.

Moviegoers have already been drawn to Spielberg's long-awaited return to the science-fiction genre, as well as the film's mysterious themes involving unknown entities, unexplained phenomena, hidden truths, and revelations. With much of the story still shrouded in secrecy, industry observers are closely watching how Disclosure Day may reshape the June box-office landscape.

New behind-the-scenes details have also emerged, offering deeper insight into the project, from the origins of Spielberg's lifelong curiosity about the universe to the surprising inclusion of Korean language elements within the film.

Disclosure Day can be viewed as the culmination of the filmmaker's decades-long exploration of science-fiction storytelling. The project originated from a 52-page treatment written by Spielberg himself, which screenwriter David Koepp spent nearly two years developing into a completed screenplay.

The film centers on a massive secret humanity was never meant to uncover and the consequences of keeping that truth hidden. Its world-building draws inspiration from a wide range of real-world mysteries and conspiracy theories, including the Roswell incident, crop circles, alleged encounters with extraterrestrial life, CIA remote-viewing programs, and various government investigations into unexplained phenomena.

Spielberg recalled that his fascination with space began in childhood while stargazing with his father.

"My father would take me outside every year to watch the Perseid meteor shower," he said. "After those nights, I became genuinely curious about what might be happening beyond those stars, whether countless solar systems existed, and whether advanced civilizations capable of crossing the cosmos might be out there."

Reflecting on the evolution of his science-fiction career, Spielberg added, "When I made Close Encounters of the Third Kind, I thought, 'Wouldn't it be amazing if all of this were true?' Nearly fifty years later, I find myself asking, 'Wouldn't it be amazing if we actually learned that all of this is true?'"

His comments suggest that the questions which have defined much of his filmmaking career remain deeply embedded within Disclosure Day.

Another element likely to intrigue Korean audiences is the appearance of Korean language dialogue in the film.

Blunt, who plays television journalist Margaret, a key figure connected to a world-shattering secret, reportedly spent months before filming learning both Korean and Russian to deepen her connection to the character. She also took an active role in developing the film's extraterrestrial language.

Rather than relying on AI-generated audio, Blunt personally created the alien vocalizations used in the film. With microphones positioned around her mouth and throat, she recorded clicking sounds, humming, breathing patterns, and various consonant combinations. The resulting performance appears in a pivotal sequence in which her character unexpectedly begins speaking a mysterious language during a live broadcast, a moment that has already generated significant buzz since the trailer's release.

Her dedication to mastering new languages and helping shape the alien communication system has added another layer of authenticity to the character.

Discussing his vision for the project, Spielberg said, "From the very first frame through a finale that runs nearly twenty minutes, I wanted to keep building toward a peak. I wanted to explore what is happening in our world, what has been hidden, and what we ultimately come to understand."

Spielberg's latest cinematic mystery arrives in South Korean theaters on June 10.
