Artistic revolutions often begin with a shift in the way artists view the world around them. As painters moved away from the rigid conventions of academic art, they sought new ways to capture reality and express emotion, paving the way for the birth of modern art.

The special exhibition Beyond Impressionism, currently on view at the Sejong Center Museum's Galleries 1 and 2, explores this period of transformation through works from the Detroit Institute of Arts. Spanning the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century, the exhibition follows the evolution of Western art through movements including Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism, the Nabis, Post-Impressionism, the School of Paris, Cubism, Fauvism and Expressionism.

The exhibition brings together some of the most influential artists in art history, including Gustave Courbet, Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani. While some enjoyed recognition during their lifetimes and others did not, all have become defining figures in the story of modern art.

Visitors can also encounter works by artists such as Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Odilon Redon, Raoul Dufy, Juan Gris and Georges Rouault, providing a broader view of the artistic movements that shaped the era.

One of the exhibition's signature works is Renoir's Woman in an Armchair, which captures the vitality and loose brushwork characteristic of early Impressionism. Rather than focusing on the precise lines and forms favored by classical painting, Renoir concentrated on conveying fleeting impressions shaped by light and atmosphere.

The exhibition also offers a fascinating glimpse into the final chapter of Van Gogh's life. In Banks of the Oise at Auvers, believed to be among the artist's last works, a tiny trace remains on the canvas. Before the paint had dried, a small insect landed on the surface and left a delicate trail as it moved across the painting. The accidental mark has remained preserved, offering visitors a rare connection to one of the artist's final creative moments.

Among the exhibition's many movements, the sections devoted to German Expressionism and the School of Paris provide a striking contrast. While Expressionist artists explored inner turmoil and existential anxiety through bold colors and powerful forms, the Blue Rider group led by Wassily Kandinsky transformed color and shape into a visual language inspired by music, helping lay the foundation for abstract art.

Nearby, Max Beckmann's Still Life with Fallen Candlestick reflects on the fragility of life through images of burning candles and withered fruit. Seen alongside his 1945 self-portrait and the statement, "Germany is dying, and so am I," the work evokes the emotional devastation experienced during and after war.

In contrast, Amedeo Modigliani's works reflect the atmosphere of Paris through portraits of ordinary people and women. As an Italian Jewish artist living in Paris, he portrayed life on the margins of society through his distinctive elongated figures. The exhibition concludes with his portraits, whose empty eyes project a sense of melancholy and introspection.

The works on display come from the Detroit Institute of Arts, a museum founded in 1885 that now houses more than 60,000 works of art. Known for its pioneering collecting practices, the institution was the first public art museum in the United States to acquire a Van Gogh painting and was also an early collector of works by Henri Matisse.
