MBC drama "Fifties Professionals" heightened the tension with an unpredictable alliance, escalating pursuit sequences and emotionally layered character conflicts.
Episode 5, which aired on June 5, followed the dangerous chase surrounding Prosecutor Kang (Kim Shin-rok) while Jung Ho-myeong (Shin Ha-kyun) and Kang Beom-ryong (Heo Sung-tae) found themselves pursuing the same objective. The episode also explored Ho-myeong's growing struggle between his family responsibilities and his mission, adding further weight to the narrative. According to Nielsen Korea, the episode recorded nationwide ratings of 4.8%, a 5.0% rating in the Seoul metropolitan area and a peak of 5.8%.
At the center of the crisis was Prosecutor Kang. As Yoo In-gu's faction (Hyun Bong-sik) moved to eliminate the prosecutor for investigating their secrets, a tense pursuit unfolded. While desperately attempting to escape, Kang was involved in a shocking accident when her vehicle plunged into a river.
A notable shift also emerged in the relationship between Jung Ho-myeong and Kang Beom-ryong. Despite years of distrust, the two formed a temporary alliance after realizing they shared the same goal of finding Prosecutor Kang. With assistance from Ma Gong-bok (Lee Hak-joo), Beom-ryong tracked potential routes, and the pair followed new leads together, displaying unexpected chemistry.
Elsewhere, tensions deepened between Bong Je-soon (Oh Jung-se) and Heo Nam-il (Kim Seong-jeong). After discovering the location where victims of Heaven Capital were staying, Nam-il lashed out at Je-soon, unable to accept reality. The conflict widened further as details surrounding Je-soon, Nam-il and Elder Heo, all connected by memories lost a decade earlier, came to light. In a critical development, Je-soon discovered Prosecutor Kang drifting in the river and rescued her, setting up a major turning point for future episodes.
Ho-myeong's personal life also began to unravel. His wife Kwon O-ran (Shin Dong-mi) grew increasingly suspicious of his repeated absences and unusual behavior, demanding to know what he was hiding. Unable to reveal his true identity, Ho-myeong remained silent, further widening the emotional distance between them.
One of the episode's strongest themes was Ho-myeong's growing awareness of age and responsibility. Unlike his days as an intelligence operative, he now finds missions physically demanding, while the burden of supporting his family weighs heavily on him. The combination of fading stamina, dangerous assignments and family obligations exposed a vulnerability rarely seen in the character.
The episode concluded with a significant turning point. Team Leader Jo (Kim Sang-ho) proposed recruiting a new partner for Ho-myeong's next mission, and the candidate was none other than Kang Beom-ryong, a man tied to him through years of hostility. Though initially reluctant, Ho-myeong ultimately sought Beom-ryong out himself, signaling that a full-fledged partnership may soon become reality.
Meanwhile, Prosecutor Kang regained consciousness, confirming her survival and raising anticipation for the next chapter. With both the rescue mission and the potential alliance now in motion, viewers are eager to see whether Ho-myeong and Beom-ryong will finally stand on the same side.
Episode 6 of "Fifties Professionals" airs on June 6 at 9:50 p.m. KST on MBC.
