One of the world's three most renowned museums, the Hermitage Museum, is meeting audiences in Seoul through an entirely new format. The digital special exhibition "The Brilliant Hermitage" has surpassed 10,000 cumulative visitors just one month after opening.
Launched on April 30 at the Cultural Depot Park in Sangam, Seoul, the exhibition places the emphasis on what it describes as a "luminous experience." Rather than transporting original artworks, the show presents digital masterpieces produced directly by the Hermitage Museum. More than 20 works, including paintings and sculptures, are reimagined on massive screens, offering visitors a fresh perspective on classical art.
Masterpieces familiar from art history books gather in a single space, including Henri Matisse's The Dance, Rembrandt's The Return of the Prodigal Son, and Leonardo da Vinci's Madonna and Child. Works by Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir further enrich the exhibition, creating a journey across artistic periods and movements. Sculpture is equally represented, with Michelangelo's Crouching Boy and intricate clock-inspired creations digitally recreated to provide a new sense of dimensionality.
The exhibition's defining feature is its use of space. A large-scale media facade inspired by the architectural grandeur of the Hermitage's Winter Palace transforms visitors from passive viewers into active participants. Images projected across walls, floors and ceilings create the sensation of walking through the historic palace itself.
According to Artworks CEO Yoo Min-seok, accessibility has been a major factor behind the exhibition's popularity. By removing the barriers of distance and time, the exhibition allows visitors to experience world-famous masterpieces up close. He also noted that digital exhibitions can spark curiosity about the original works, presenting a new model for engaging with art.
"The Brilliant Hermitage" runs through July 30. As reality and digital imagination converge within its immersive spaces, the exhibition continues to attract attention as one of Seoul's most distinctive cultural destinations this summer.
