The violin sonata is a genre that leaves little room for concealment. Every phrase, gesture, and shift in tone exposes the performer's inner world. Shin Sung-hee's recital, From Introspection to Fantasy, traces a musical path through the cool structural clarity of Paul Hindemith, the restless romanticism of Robert Schumann, and the radiant lyricism of Richard Strauss.

The program presents three contrasting masterpieces: Hindemith's Violin Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 11 No. 1, Schumann's Violin Sonata No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 105, and Strauss's Violin Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 18. Together, they create a narrative shaped by restraint, emotional tension, and imaginative expansion.

Hindemith's sonata opens the evening with concentrated intensity. Rather than embracing Romantic excess, the work prioritizes structural discipline and condensed musical ideas. Violin and piano build tension through rhythmic precision and carefully crafted motifs. Within the recital's overarching theme, the piece represents the starting point of introspection.

Schumann's Violin Sonata No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 105 deepens the emotional atmosphere. Within its compact structure, anxiety, passion, and lyrical sensitivity coexist. The violin line remains closely intertwined with the piano, creating a sense of emotional urgency that continuously pushes the music forward.

The second half culminates in Strauss's Violin Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 18, a work that embodies the fantasy suggested in the recital's title. Written during the composer's youth, the sonata unfolds with sweeping melodies, rich textures, and expansive Romantic expression. The piano assumes a role equal to that of the violin, transforming the work into a dialogue between two powerful voices.

The piano part will be performed by Ilya Rashkovskiy, the Russian pianist whose international achievements include second prize at the Long-Thibaud Competition, fourth prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition, third prize at the Rubinstein International Piano Competition, and first prize at the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition. Currently a professor at Sungshin Women's University, Rashkovskiy maintains an active international performing career.

In works such as Strauss's sonata, where the piano serves as a major architectural force within the music, the chemistry between the two performers becomes essential. While Shin shapes the emotional trajectory of each work through the violin, Rashkovskiy expands its harmonic and sonic dimensions.

Shin graduated from Yewon School, Seoul Arts High School, Seoul National University College of Music, and its graduate program before earning a master's degree from the Eastman School of Music and a doctorate from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as a full scholarship recipient.

She has received recognition at major Korean competitions, including the Dong-A Music Competition and the Ewha & Kyunghyang Competition. During her student years, she appeared as a soloist with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra. She also performed as a member of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, collaborating with some of the world's leading conductors and musicians.

Among her most acclaimed achievements is her dedication to the German repertoire. After completing a full cycle of Beethoven's Violin Sonatas and later presenting the complete violin works of Brahms, Shin earned praise for her meticulous analysis and interpretation of large-scale musical structures.

She currently teaches at Mokwon University and performs as a member of the Korean Chamber Orchestra.

Shin Sung-hee Violin Recital From Introspection to Fantasy will take place on June 21 at the Recital Hall of the Seoul Arts Center.
