An outdoor concert led by the Seongdong Dream Orchestra will bring orchestral music into the everyday rhythms of the city this month.
Titled “Forest Orchestra: Time of Growth,” the performance will take place on May 30 at 4 p.m. Organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Seongdong-gu, and hosted in cooperation with the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service, the concert will be conducted by Yoon Yong-woon and run for approximately 70 minutes. Rather than choosing a traditional concert hall, the organizers selected an open-air urban park setting in an effort to bring classical music closer to local residents.
The concert is part of “Dream Ensemble,” a nationwide collaborative project connected to the long-running “Dream Orchestra” arts education initiative for children and teenagers. Launched in 2010, the program is presenting performances throughout May across 44 regional institutions under this year’s theme, “The Future of Dream Orchestra Is Growth.”
The Seongdong Dream Orchestra was established in 2012 after becoming Seoul’s first designated regional hub for the program. Supported by the local government, it later became Korea’s first district-run orchestra in 2018.
Designed with accessibility in mind, the program combines familiar classical repertoire with widely recognized film music. The orchestra will open with “Dream Orchestra,” followed by The Magic Flute Overture by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and selections from Carmen Suite by Georges Bizet. Music from The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, including the “March,” “Trepak” and the famous waltz, will 이어 fill the stage before the concert concludes with Children of Sanchez and selections from film scores.
The venue, Seongsu Shoe Theme Park, reflects the industrial and cultural identity of Seongsu-dong, an area long associated with Korea’s handmade shoe industry. The park features shoe-themed sculptures and public installations honoring the district’s shoemaking heritage.
