Flutist Kim Sohee, recognized for her delicate technique and nuanced musical interpretation, will meet audiences through a solo recital highlighting the expressive depth of the flute repertoire.
Kim will hold her recital on May 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Kumho Art Hall Yonsei in Seoul, presenting a program spanning flute solo works and flute-and-piano repertoire. The performance is set to explore the instrument’s lyrical color and dynamic range through music from the Baroque era to late Romanticism.
After graduating from Sungshin Women’s University College of Music, Kim continued her studies in Europe, completing master’s programs at the Rostock University of Music and Theatre in Germany, Kalaidos University of Music in Zurich, and the Anton Rubinstein International Music Academy.
She drew attention early through a series of competition victories in Korea, including first prizes at the Seongjeong Music Competition, Edu Classic Competition, Seoul Arts College Competition, and the Pohang Music Association Competition.
Her career later expanded across European stages. Kim performed at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Music Festival in Germany and appeared with ensembles including the North Czech Philharmonic Teplice, the Rostock University Symphony Orchestra, the Savaria Symphony Orchestra, the Prime Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Korea Flute Educators Association.
She has also performed at major venues such as Rudolfinum Dvořák Hall in Prague, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Volkstheater Rostock, Katharinensaal in Rostock, and Baumgarten in Vienna, building experience as both a soloist and ensemble performer.
Kim studied under Dirk Peppel and Leonid Grudin. She previously served as an intern and guest member of the North German Rostock Philharmonic Orchestra, while also performing with the North German Orchestra Academy and the Mecklenburg Wind Academy. She later worked as a full-time flute instructor at Berlin Notenkind Music School. Currently, she is active as a member of the Arts Council Korea ARKO Ensemble in Europe.
Pianist Kim Sangwon will join the recital. He received third prize and the Composer Special Prize at the Lyon International Piano Competition, along with the Bach Special Prize at the Ibiza International Piano Competition. He has also appeared in performances including the Kumho Prodigy Concert series and a recital hosted by Bechstein in Germany.
The recital will open with Marin Marais’ “Les Folies d'Espagne for Flute Solo,” a work that highlights the ornamentation and rhythmic flow characteristic of Baroque variation style.
The program also includes Benjamin Godard’s “Suite de Trois Morceaux for Flute and Piano, Op. 116,” known for its elegant melodic lines and refined Romantic textures, as well as Heinrich Friedrich Ludwig Rühling’s “Fantasie for Flute and Piano, Op. 55,” a piece emphasizing lyrical phrasing and expressive nuance.
The concert will conclude with Sigfrid Karg-Elert’s “Sinfonische Kanzone, Op. 114,” a work that intertwines late German Romanticism with modern harmonic color, revealing both the flute’s lyrical warmth and structural intensity.
