Another high-altitude variable has emerged as a major concern for Hong Myung-bo’s South Korea ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
LAFC suffered a crushing 0-4 defeat against Toluca on Wednesday at Estadio Nemesio Diez in Mexico, losing 5-2 on aggregate in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals. The match drew attention not only because Son Heung-min started for LAFC, but because it was played at an altitude of 2,670 meters — significantly higher than Guadalajara, where South Korea will play two of its World Cup group-stage matches.
Altitude has become a major topic surrounding South Korea’s World Cup preparations. Guadalajara sits around 1,600 meters above sea level, high enough to impact player performance due to thinner air and reduced oxygen levels. The Korea Football Association is already preparing an adaptation plan, with the national team set to hold a pre-tournament camp in Salt Lake City before moving to Guadalajara.
Traditionally, the biggest concern at high altitude has been physical fatigue. Lower oxygen levels increase muscle fatigue and make recovery more difficult. However, LAFC’s match against Toluca highlighted another important factor: changes in ball movement.
At high altitude, reduced air resistance causes passes and shots to travel faster and farther than usual. Players often struggle to judge pace and distance accurately.
Toluca appeared to use those conditions intentionally. The Mexican side repeatedly attempted long-range shots, taking advantage of the unpredictable movement and extra power generated in thin air. Defender Everardo Lopez, not known for scoring goals, produced a powerful long-distance strike that left veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris with little chance to react.
Even simple passes and goal kicks looked difficult to control. Lloris frequently overhit long balls, while throw-ins and routine passes often traveled several meters farther than expected.
The match offered an important tactical lesson for South Korea. LAFC dropped their defensive line to protect against fatigue, but that strategy left space outside the penalty area and allowed Toluca to unleash wave after wave of long-range efforts.
For Hong Myung-bo’s side, the takeaway is clear: altitude affects not only stamina, but also shooting, passing and overall game rhythm. With World Cup matches set to be played in similar conditions, adapting quickly to the altered ball physics could become just as important as physical preparation.
