The finale of Mad Concrete Dreams closes not with triumph, but with a lingering sense of unease.
Aired April 19, the final episode sees Ki Soo-jong (Ha Jung-woo) emerge as the apparent victor of the redevelopment war, securing immense wealth. Yet the cost proves irreversible. His wife Kim Sun (Lim Soo-jung) and daughter both leave him, and despite his financial ascent, he is left isolated, consumed by the consequences of his choices.
The episode’s tension centers on Yona (Shim Eun-kyung), whose violent pursuit of Kim Sun and Jeon Yi-kyung (Krystal Jung) escalates the conflict. Soo-jong devises a calculated trap, secretly coordinating with police under the guise of sacrificing Kim Sun to capture Yona.
However, the situation shifts when Yona targets Yi-kyung instead. In a decisive twist, her own associate, the undertaker (Lee Shin-gi), turns the gun on her, killing her instantly. The reveal confirms that Soo-jong orchestrated the entire outcome, eliminating threats while consolidating control over redevelopment shares.
Time passes, and Soo-jong is no longer tied to the deteriorating Seyoon Building. Instead, he stands as the owner of a high-value property in Nubocity, a symbol of his rise from poverty to real estate power. Yet his reality remains hollow. Alone on his birthday, burdened by debt despite his apparent success, he faces the collapse of his personal life as Kim Sun presents divorce papers. Yi-kyung, meanwhile, gives birth and raises her child alone.
The story refuses closure. Soo-jong receives a message indicating impending auction procedures tied to his properties, reintroducing instability. Soon after, he is abducted by an employee (Ju Ji-hoon) of Goldrush Investment, a firm that has acquired Real Capital. The man’s invitation, “Shall we talk business, landlord?” signals a new phase of confrontation.
Soo-jong’s response—calm and unflinching—contrasts sharply with his earlier desperation in Episode 1, underscoring his transformation. The shift suggests that while he has survived one cycle of conflict, the larger game continues.
Mad Concrete Dreams ultimately reframes villainy, portraying ordinary individuals pushed to extremes by survival. Its unpredictable narrative, marked by recurring character deaths and tonal shifts between thriller and black comedy, establishes a distinct genre identity.
The ensemble cast, including Ha Jung-woo, Lim Soo-jung, Kim Jun-han, Krystal Jung, and Shim Eun-kyung, delivers layered performances that chart the gradual moral descent of their characters. Supporting actors further enrich the narrative with intense, grounded portrayals.
The final episode recorded a nationwide rating of 3.7 percent.
