JTBC’s weekend drama We Are All Trying Here has begun building anticipation with the release of its Episode 1 teaser, ahead of its April 18 premiere.
The preview follows Hwang Dong-man, an aspiring film director who has endured 20 years chasing his debut. Despite relentless effort, reality remains unforgiving, with the industry’s barriers still firmly in place and even his family urging him toward stability over ambition.
The emotional divide between Dong-man and his peers becomes increasingly stark. While those who started alongside him have moved forward, he remains seemingly frozen in place. Once lively gatherings now feel strained, visually reinforcing his growing isolation and sense of inadequacy.
Yet Dong-man refuses to stop. His persistence intensifies, shifting from quiet endurance to a more confrontational determination. Rather than yielding, he continues to push forward with raw tenacity.
The narrative pivots with the arrival of Byun Eun-a. Their first meeting unfolds at a railroad crossing, where she immediately recognizes the value in Dong-man’s perspective. Unlike others, she engages with curiosity rather than dismissal, altering the emotional trajectory of the story.
The visual framing is symbolic. Separated by a railroad barrier, the two characters embody a moment of suspension and transition. As the signal changes, it marks not only the lifting of a physical barrier but the reactivation of Dong-man’s stalled life.
The production team highlights that the drama confronts emotions such as helplessness, inferiority, and jealousy, while also exploring the potential for change through human connection. The story traces how individuals, once drained of color, gradually rediscover meaning through relationships.
Written by Park Hae-young and directed by Cha Young-hoon, We Are All Trying Here combines grounded emotional storytelling with restrained yet deliberate direction.
The series ultimately centers on an individual burdened by the feeling of falling behind, charting a path toward inner stability. With its focus on universally shared emotional struggles, it is positioned to deliver a deeply resonant narrative.
