Cheoyongmu is a royal court dance performed with the mask of Cheoyong, distinguished as the only Korean court dance to feature a human-faced mask. Designated Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 39 in 1971, it is now officially recognized as National Intangible Heritage Cheoyongmu. In 2009, it was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Its origin lies in a legend from the reign of King Heongang of Unified Silla. According to the story, Cheoyong dispelled a malevolent spirit that violated his wife through song and dance. From this narrative, the performance came to embody both exorcism and the invocation of auspicious energy.

The dance is performed by five figures representing the five cardinal directions. Each wears a distinct color: blue for the east, red for the south, white for the west, black for the north, and yellow for the center. This configuration reflects the cosmology of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, visually expressing the intent to drive away misfortune and invite prosperity.

Historical records such as Yongjae Chonghwa and Akhak Gwebeom trace its evolution. Initially performed by a single dancer, Cheoyongmu developed into a five-directional formation during the early Joseon period. It later became a fixed element of royal banquets and year-end Narye rituals, where it served to ward off evil spirits and pray for peace, as also noted in UNESCO’s description.

Symbolism extends to the mask and costume. The reddish tone of the mask and peach motifs signify protection against evil, while peony decorations represent wealth and auspicious fortune. The mask is adorned with tin earrings and lead ornaments, and the black hat features two peonies and seven peaches.

Cheoyongmu transcends the category of court dance. It stands as a layered cultural form where Silla mythology, Joseon ritual practice, and contemporary performance aesthetics converge. The enduring human wish to repel misfortune and secure peace continues to resonate, which is why Cheoyongmu remains profoundly relevant today.
