The musical Hongryeon has unveiled a compelling addition to its final run, further amplifying its box office momentum.
Actress Han Jae-ah, who led the original production, will return as a special cast member. She is set to appear in only three performances during the final schedule, which begins on April 28 and runs for approximately three weeks.
Having earned both critical acclaim and audience praise during the 2024 premiere for her nuanced emotional delivery and stable vocal performance, Han is expected to once again reinforce the production’s emotional depth in the role of Hongryeon. Alongside Kim I-hoo and Hong Na-hyun, as well as newly joined Lee Ji-hye and Kang Hye-in, the production is poised to present more layered interpretations of its characters.
Hongryeon is an original musical that reinterprets the classic Korean folktales Janghwa Hongryeon and Baridegi through a contemporary lens, distinguished by its powerful rock sound and unconventional narrative structure. During its premiere, the production achieved a near-perfect audience rating of 9.9 and an average seat occupancy rate exceeding 99 percent, later winning Best Musical at the 9th Korea Musical Awards. This season further enhances immersion through refined costume details and heightened directorial execution tailored to each character’s narrative.
The performance will continue through May 17 at Chungmu Art Center’s Black Theater.
