The AI-driven film The Man in Hanbok is set for release in South Korea this May, positioning itself as a test case for how generative AI may reshape production models within the K-content ecosystem.
Based on director Lee Sang-hoon’s novel of the same name, the film begins with a speculative premise that the figure depicted in a painting by Rubens is in fact Joseon-era scientist Jang Yeong-sil. The intellectual property previously demonstrated its market viability through a stage musical adaptation, which sold out upon its premiere and ranked first in audience voting. Building on that narrative foundation, the film employs generative AI to construct a transhistorical setting spanning 15th-century Joseon and the Italian Renaissance.
The project has already gained traction within AI-focused film circuits. It received the grand prize at the Korea AI Film Festival (KACF) and was invited to events including the Busan International AI Film Festival (BIAIF) and the World AI Film Festival (WAIFF), highlighting its positioning at the intersection of technology and storytelling.
Industry attention has also expanded globally. Variety covered the project as an example of the growing scope of AI-driven content production, while responses at Hong Kong Filmart indicated rising interest from international buyers and investors. The film has been cited as a case illustrating the convergence of AI technology with Eastern narrative frameworks.
From scenario development to visual execution, AI was integrated across the full production pipeline. The project points to a potential shift away from capital-intensive filmmaking toward a model centered on technological efficiency and creative direction.
The production company Box Media stated that the project aims to evaluate whether the combination of Korean storytelling and AI technology can evolve into a viable production model, adding that the focus remains on balancing technical innovation with narrative coherence.
