As ESG accountability solidifies as a defining metric in the global entertainment industry, SM Entertainment is scaling its proprietary “SMile” initiative into a structured global value chain through its long-standing partnership with UNICEF.
On March 30, SM Entertainment announced that it recently signed its fourth social contribution agreement with UNICEF Korea at the UNICEF office in Jakarta, Indonesia. The initiative centers on empowering girls and advancing environmentally sustainable school infrastructure.
The partnership represents a shift from symbolic philanthropy to a systemized ESG model embedded within the K-pop business ecosystem. By integrating SM’s global cultural platform with UNICEF’s humanitarian network, the collaboration signals a scalable framework for industry-wide ESG expansion.
The signing ceremony was attended by SM CGO Choi Jung-min, UNICEF Korea Secretary General Cho Mi-jin, UNICEF Indonesia Deputy Representative Jean Lokenga, and climate and WASH specialist Maraita Ristiyasari. Jiwoo and Carmen of SM’s group Hearts2Hearts were also present, aligning the company’s artist ecosystem with its ESG initiatives.
This marks the fourth renewal since the partnership began in 2015. Building on prior operations in Vietnam and the Philippines, SM is extending its ESG footprint into Indonesia, reinforcing the global scalability of its “SMile” campaign.
Execution plans are clearly defined. By 2028, SM aims to upgrade sanitation infrastructure across 60 schools with gender-separated facilities and water quality monitoring systems. In parallel, climate-focused education programs, including school gardening initiatives, will be implemented in 45 schools to support environmental awareness.
Jiwoo and Carmen stated, “We hope Indonesian children can grow up healthy and happy in their schools. We will do our best to contribute, even in small ways, wherever help is needed.”
Choi Jung-min added, “This new journey builds on a decade of trust. We hope to deliver even more dreams and hope moving forward.” Cho Mi-jin echoed, “We will do our utmost to ensure this becomes a meaningful starting point for shaping the future of children in Indonesia.”
