A case that defies basic logic has surfaced from a small studio apartment in Incheon. Years after her death, a woman was found preserved in a mummified state, surrounded by traces of a deeply unsettling and inexplicable daily life.
This week, Unanswered Questions examines a body concealment case that remained undiscovered for roughly three and a half years. The case dates back to July 2024, when a landlord entered the unit after losing contact with a long-term tenant who had stopped paying rent for over ten days.
Inside, the room was so densely packed with garbage and belongings that movement was nearly impossible. Yet amid the chaos, one detail stood out: a neatly arranged set of bedding in one corner. What lay beneath it was anything but ordinary.
Inside the bedding was a body unlike typical remains. It had not decomposed into bones; instead, the skin remained intact, dried and flattened into a mummified form. More startling still, the body belonged not to a man, but to an unidentified woman.
An autopsy revealed signs of strangulation, pointing to possible homicide. The investigation quickly turned to the tenant, identified as Mr. Kim. At the time, he was already in custody on unrelated charges, and further questioning brought new details to light.
Kim claimed the deceased was his former partner, Park Ji-young (alias). He stated that in January 2021, she had been suffering from depression and asked him to end her life, a request he says he carried out. He also claimed he attempted suicide afterward but failed, and continued living in the apartment with the body left untouched.
What investigators uncovered next proved even more difficult to grasp. Kim reportedly maintained his daily routine in the same space as the body, taking photographs and eating meals nearby, repeating behavior that defied ordinary understanding.
Was this truly an act carried out at her request, or is there another truth yet to emerge? The questions surrounding what happened inside that confined space, and why he remained with the body for so long, continue to deepen.
