The Broadway musical Lempicka is continuing its strong box office run in Korea, topping ticket reservation charts following its third round of ticket releases, fueled in part by the return of actress Cha Ji-yeon to the stage after King of Active Singers 3.
Lempicka portrays the life and artistic journey of Tamara de Lempicka, a leading figure of Art Deco painting in early 20th-century Europe. Set against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution and World War eras, the production captures the survival and choices of a female artist navigating turbulent times. The musical drew significant attention from its Broadway premiere for both its narrative depth and visual style.
The Korean production features a high-caliber cast, including Kim Sun-young, Park Hye-na, and Jung Sun-ah in the role of Tamara, alongside Cha Ji-yeon, Lina, and Son Seung-yeon as Rafaela. Additional performances by Kim Ho-young and Cho Hyung-gyun as Marinetti, Kim Woo-hyung and Kim Min-chul as Tadeusz Lempicki, and Choi Jung-won and Kim Hye-mi as Suzy Solidor further reinforce the production’s depth and stage presence.
The musical previously earned critical recognition at the 77th Tony Awards, receiving nominations for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Featured Actress, and Best Scenic Design. It was also nominated for Outstanding Production of a Musical at the Drama League Awards, positioning it as one of the most notable contemporary Broadway productions.
The Korean premiere maintains the original Broadway sensibility while incorporating nuanced direction tailored to local audiences. With its proven artistic merit combined with the capabilities of top-tier Korean performers, Lempicka has emerged as one of the most talked-about productions in the first half of the year.
