A series of deaths involving men in their 20s at motels in Seoul’s Gangbuk District is set to be uncovered on SBS investigative program Unanswered Questions. At the center of the case is a 20-year-old woman, identified as Kim So-young.
On January 29, a man in his 20s was found dead at a motel in Gangbuk. Less than two weeks later, on February 10, another man in his 20s was discovered dead at a separate motel just one kilometer away. The incidents shocked the local community. “They said he died while alone. My younger brother was healthy with no underlying conditions, so it felt strange,” said the older brother of the second victim.
Autopsy results revealed that both victims had excessive amounts of benzodiazepine-class psychoactive substances in their systems. CCTV footage confirmed that in both cases, the same woman had entered the motels with the victims prior to their deaths.
Kim, who was later arrested, allegedly prepared psychiatric prescription drugs in advance, mixing them into hangover relief drinks to incapacitate the men. Over a span of four months, she is believed to have caused the deaths of two men and rendered four others unconscious. Footage also showed her remaining composed at the scene, even retrieving delivered food while the victims were left unconscious.
During police questioning, Kim claimed, “I only used the drugs to avoid unwanted physical contact. I had no intention to kill.” However, authorities noted that the second fatal incident occurred after she had already been notified of a police investigation, raising further questions.
A former boyfriend who dated her for three months testified, “We had only a little to drink, but suddenly everything went blank.” Multiple tip-offs helped investigators piece together what they described as a careless yet disturbing pattern of crimes. Psychological assessments reportedly indicated psychopathic tendencies.
Despite the polished and attractive image presented on her social media, investigators say her real behavior and motives paint a far more disturbing picture.
The families of the victims have spoken publicly for the first time. Investigators also recovered and restored a locked mobile phone belonging to the first victim, uncovering disturbing messages allegedly sent by Kim. The full scope of the case and its underlying motives will be revealed in detail on the March 21 broadcast of SBS Unanswered Questions.
