The Korean historical drama "The King's Warden," directed by Jang Hang-jun, continues its remarkable box office run, overtaking several blockbuster titles and edging closer to the Top 5 among Korea’s all-time 10-million-admission films.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing system on March 16, the film drew 478,177 viewers on March 15 alone, maintaining its No.1 spot at the box office. Its cumulative audience now stands at 13,467,844. Over the three-day weekend from March 13 to 15, the film attracted more than 1.25 million moviegoers.
Set in Cheongnyeongpo in 1457, the story follows a village chief who voluntarily chooses exile to protect his community and shares the fate of a young deposed king. The film has drawn attention for portraying a previously untold story surrounding King Danjong. Performances by Yoo Hae-jin, Park Ji-hoon, Yoo Ji-tae, Jeon Mi-do, and Kim Min have been widely praised, fueling strong word-of-mouth momentum.
After surpassing the 10-million-admission milestone in just 31 days, "The King's Warden" has continued its record-breaking climb. Over the weekend it surpassed "12.12: The Day" (13.12 million), "Avatar" (13.33 million), and "Veteran" (13.41 million), rising to No.7 among Korea’s highest-grossing films. It is now expected to surpass "Frozen II" (13.76 million) and "Avengers: Endgame" (13.97 million) in the coming days.
"Hoppers" ranked No.2 at the box office with 173,245 viewers on the day, bringing its cumulative audience to 531,192.
The animated adventure follows a girl named Mabel who becomes a robotic beaver through a technology known as “hopping” and infiltrates an animal world filled with unexpected discoveries and dangers.
"Samakdo" came in third with 38,158 viewers, raising its cumulative audience to 57,326.
The film depicts a mysterious village tied to a cult that disappeared after the Japanese colonial era, where prophecies and hidden secrets reveal a vision of hell.
The re-release "F1 The Movie" ranked fourth after drawing 34,481 viewers, bringing its cumulative audience to 5,261,209.
The film centers on veteran driver Sonny Hayes, who joins a struggling Formula One team and teams up with a brilliant young rookie for the race of his life.
"Humint" placed fifth with 16,307 viewers for the day, bringing its cumulative total to 1,967,610.
Set in Vladivostok, the espionage thriller follows individuals with different motives colliding in a frozen port city where secrets and truths sink beneath the icy sea. Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, known for "Escape from Mogadishu," "Smugglers," and the "Veteran" series, the film stars Zo In-sung, Park Jung-min, Shin Se-kyung, and Park Hae-joon.
